Cat injury advice

(Anonymous) 2016-10-02 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I was having a pleasantly uneventful day, and then my teenage kitten bolted in with an eye injury. He won't open it and it looks all swollen and weepy. It's Sunday, so the vets are all closed. Should I call the emergency vet?

Oh dear - is their a help line you can just call to get advice first?

I guess the big thing is whether or not he's in a lot of pain. You should bring him in anyway as soon as you can, but if he doesn't seem too bothered you can maybe hold off. Of course, cats are notoriously good at hiding pain, but if he's eating and playing normally you might be okay to wait until Monday.

Still, you probably want to call a vet help line and get advice from an expert who can at least identify if the problem is serious or painful.

I read some stuff on PetMD (a lot of scary stuff, eek!) and it seems to be not quite an emergency, so far at least. I think what happened was that he ran into something at top speed and got basically a punch to the eye, poor little bugger. We'll probably take him to the vet tomorrow just to be safe. Thanks for your help and concern :-)

If he'll let you, try wiping it very carefully with a warm, damp cloth, and then see if he'll let you gently open the lid. If there's no blood, or the eye itself doesn't seem punctured or scratched, you're okay to wait until Monday.

Unless he seems in some kind of agony, or is actively trying to claw his eye repeatedly, he'll probably be okay.

*hugs*

Hurt pets suck! Hope he's okay.

He seems to be able to open his eye, and the eye itself looks normal, so I'm hopeful it's just a bad bump rather than anything serious. He seems pretty calm now, and has eaten and gone to sleep. I'm going to gently wipe it with some mild saline water after he has a nap. Thank you for your concern, it's really upsetting to see him in pain.

That sounds not so bad, then. I know cats tend to hide their pain really well, but he wouldn't eat if he were really feeling bad.

Only thing worse than a hurt pet is a hurt kid. Good luck!

Yep. To get it put down. And if you let your cats wander out of doors then please stop keeping cats. The outdoors is not good for your cats and cats are not good for the outdoors.
