Vacation destinations that should have been awesome

(Anonymous) 2016-10-02 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
We sort of touched on this on the thread yesterday, but what vacation destinations do you think weren't as good as you'd hoped? Or could have been good but were ruined for you for some reason?

Went to Mackinac island in Michigan. Torrential rain the whole weekend. We got some good fudge, though.

Martha's Vineyard: probably the most gorgeous place I've been, but I get terrible allergies every time I go, which makes it harder to enjoy.

Went to the Great Smoky Mountains with my sister to go hiking. Got about twenty feet down the trail, thought we heard bears, and went back to the hotel to eat pizza. (Personally I preferred this to hiking XD).

You know, I always thing travel is what you make it, and I haven't been to a place I've regretted yet...that being said, some things are just TOO touristy. Like, parts of Greece, you basically can't go anywhere without the being 2000 other people there.

Yeah, and I sometimes feel that because it's so touristy, you don't even really get a sense of the place. I felt that way with London - I loved London, I really did, but it felt like I was in London-for-people-who've-never-been, not London.

Yeah, that's what I mean - like you have the boat tours and stuff tht are just so disconnected with the place. Like, I know I've had this one afternoon where we just sort of lay in hammocks in what i think was a wildlife reserve, and you have the smell of cypress and the crickets and if felt much more like "Greece". Apparently if you go in winter it's completely different.

NYC. Mostly spent in Times Square so that is my fault.

You also were there such a short time, I don't blame you. Just means you have to come back and see more awesome sides of NYC.

Yeah, I'll have to come back and visit more than the city center. Probably do that when I nephew gets big enough to enjoy a trip.

I was disappointed by Stratford Upon Avon. The tour guide wasn't very enthused, though, so I don't think that helped, and we'd just spent a long (rainy) day in Oxford, so I think everyone was kind of tired at that point.

Also, I made the mistake of going to Disney World with coasterheads. I'm not a coasterhead. My thinking was that we'd go for a few hours, get dinner somewhere, and call it a night. No, we had to go there from the second it opened until we were practically escorted out by the security guards, at which point my feet were bleeding from blisters. I'm sure Disney is great, I remember loving it as a kid but that soured me on it for a long time.

All the times I've gone (to Disneyland and CA Adventure), it's been with my family (one of which cannot ride anything for health reasons, everyone else has stomach issues so no nausea-inducing rides) and each time I've loved it. We only ride the really relaxing, less-popular rides, attend the shows, and take advantage of any really interesting things we find (like the tortilla "factory" tour with free samples at the end), and by the end of the day we're not exhausted, just a little tired.

The people you go with really affect how much you enjoy the trip. If I went with coasterheads I'd probably be really sour halfway through the day.

While we lived in Croatia, we went to Dubrovnik. I was expecting some awesome historical stuff, but really it was just touristy. The historical fort that is supposed to be the drawing point is entirely filled with little shops.

The one time we went to London, I was attending a Harry Potter conference. Which was pretty cool, but i wish I'd gotten time to see the sights too. I feel like I missed out. Looking back, I'd rather have seen the sights than done the conference.

I can sort of relate? I didn't go for a HP conference, but I went for school, and it's not the same because everything's scheduled and obligatory, and we also did a lot of day trips. I saw more of the underground than I saw London itself. Fortunately I got to go again with family, and that was much more fun because we could just do what we wanted.

I mean, we did have a few scheduled "free days", which were fun, but on two of them I didn't have anyone to go with (everyone was scattered, so a friend I was supposed to meet at breakfast ended up sleeping in, etc.), so I ended up milling around the area before going back to the hotel and reading.

*Although in retrospect, we could've just done it the old fashioned way and made plans the day before.

I really wanted to go out and do more in Paris and maybe take a day trip to see some other places. I had the flu and a nasty fever for most of it so I'm impressed with what I actually ended up doing but after all the time I spent planning things and looking forward to it, I felt disappointed. Also, why is nothing open on Sunday? Why!? It makes no sense to me.

That times a million when I think I probably won't be going on any more big trips for the rest of my life. Thanks, body. You ruin all the things.

Trip to Napa, ruined by weirdly racist waitress, then food poisoning that I got at the restaurant with the weirdly racist waitress.

I don't know how Vienna ended up being the most underwhelming destination on my most recent traipse through Europe, but it was.

Actually I think a big part of it was because it was summer and therefore no orchestra.

Italy. But that was because I went there at the very end of tourist season. Most places were closed, so when I wasn't on a tour, there was nothing to do except go to beach.

Berlin. Every fucking time. Best thing last time was the streets bein flooded and the cars drifting and splashing along under the balcony while a little chemical toilet floated down the street.

Paris was a little disappointing, but that was mainly because I wasn't feeling well. I was really looking forward to the Louvre, but I had a horrible headache and there were zillions of people, so I started feeling both anxious and dizzy. I ended up leaving way earlier than I wanted to because I just couldn't deal with the crowds.

I liked Europe but I would have liked it a lot more if I hadn't been there with people I couldn't stand and was not in a position to just walk away from.

Bangkok, Thailand

I've been living here for almost 2 months now, and I can't wait to leave next week... I do love the food culture so much, but the energy and I don't get along well at all.

It feels like a very personal dislike though. I wouldn't really advertise Bangkok as a place that "omg sucks!" or anything, it's just not for me. Plus, I'm alone here (working), and my experience is pretty unique. I'd probably come back with some friends for a week or two someday, just to see how it is then.

But for now?

Yeah. Ready for you, Tokyo! 10 more daysss

Bangkok is definitely more "wild weekend with friends" than somewhere I would spend an extended amount of time, and that's coming from someone living in SEA. Also the traffic has gotten so much worse in the last few years... and it wasn't great before either.

Ireland. I went in the mid-90s and ....there is no way to say this without sounding horrible... It was much poorer and run down than I had expected. The first couple of nights, we stayed in a hotel that was supposed to be three stars, and there was mold in the bathtub and the plaster walls were crumbling onto the floor, and that pretty much set the tone for the rest of our stay.

But the landscape was beautiful, right?
