New Fandoms / Fall TV

(Anonymous) 2016-10-08 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
This is kind of a catchall, I guess, but:

Getting into any new fandoms? Have any impressions of the TV shows that have premiered this fall? Talk about it! And change the subject as appropriate

Shadowhunters trailer came out. Ugh. I don't want to watch it live but I might ahve to.

I'm enjoying The Exorcist, so far, though I find the pacing odd. Things are actually moving surprisingly quickly (I wasn't expecting actual undeniable confirmation of the possession until halfway through the season), but each episode feels extremely slow.

I should try to watch that. I bailed halfway through the pilot because it just seemed way too slow.

I do love Geena Davis...

I'm not sure if I'd recommend it if you found the first episode too slow. The second was the most deliberately plotted so far, but I don't think it's skippable, so you'd mostly be in for 40 minutes of boredom.

Timeless/Conviction/Westworld

(Anonymous) 2016-10-08 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I enjoyed both the Timeless and Conviction pilots. They aren't exactly breaking new ground, but they're full of pretty people and entertaining enough. It was good to see Peggy Carter again, at least.

I actually liked the second episode of Westworld much better than the first. Thandie Newton was fantastic in it, and also that McPoyle brother scrubs up pretty good.

Also, GBBO!! Love those baked goods.

I really liked Timeless! It feels breezy and fun and adventurous, and Abigail Spencer is really pretty and really talented, and it has Phil from Better Off Ted. And it lets me make a ton of jokes about time travel which is always appreciated.

Conviction... I don't think is a good show, but it's pretty lightweight, and Peggy Carter, and I think some of the places they gestured with the various interpersonal relationships looked like they could be interesting, so I'll stick with it for a second. It really does feel like a high-budget version of a USA show which is an interesting vibe. Also, Damien from Mean Girls is in it! Which I personally got very excited about.

I agree about Conviction. It has a a good cast (even tho I am not fond of Hayley Atwell), but the plot is trite and writing is weak.

I wasn't too fond of the Timeless trailer, but I'm going to give it a try and see. I liked Conviction, though it wasn't amazing. Going to give it a few more episodes before I decide if it goes on the permanent watch list.

And yes to this season of GBBO. I'm loving the contestants this year (especially Candice and Andrew for some reason).

Timeless was a lot of fun. I was a little worried based on the rather lackluster trailers, but I enjoyed it a lot. And it has Anakin Skywalker and Moira Queen!

I thought I would start watching Yuri on ice. I just saw the first episode and changed my mind.
Maybe I'll catch up on some old anime classics instead...

I'm kinda interested in watching Yuri on Ice. Is it really bad?

AYRT
Nah, not bad per se, just not what I'd hoped for after first watching the first trailer.

I am surprisingly kind of enjoying Pitch! It's overdramatic, but there's an interesting amount of real baseball dynamics and I'm liking the characters quite a bit. The Padres catcher is the best, and I'm liking his developing friendship with Ginny, but have all kinds of DO NOT WANT for anything romantic there. :\

I wish they'd actually go on road games. Okay, they went to Dodger Stadium, but that's just up the freeway a little. Although my favorite take on the pilot was from the FanGraphs reviewer who said the most unrealistic thing about Pitch was, "showing a Petco Park crowd chanting “Let’s go Padres” when the Dodgers are there." SAVAGE.

But I'm going to continue giving it a chance, even though it looks kinda doomed.

Luke Cage?

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2016-10-08 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Well I started Luke Cage, but I'm only two episodes in. I might give Westworld a try.

MacGyver Lethal Weapon Designated Survivor

(Anonymous) 2016-10-08 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Really enjoying Mac more than I thought I would. Like Lethal Weapon but haven't picked it up since pilot. DS is starting to lose its luster for me.

I've really needed new shows since at this point either the shows I loved were cancelled (Castle) or I fell out of love and stopped watching. (Grey's Anatomy)

So far I've watched the Good Place (bleh), Designated Survivor (my favorite new show), Bull (pretty good so far), Notorious (meh, not worth watching), and Conviction (okay so far, going to give it a try). Still have Pitch, Frequency, Timeless, and Son of Zorn to watch (concept looks hilarious).

Didn't like the Macgyver pilot. Well, parts I liked, but it just seemed overwrought and the focus on him and ex-girlfriend just didn't endear me to the show. And the actors all seemed so smug. So probably not watching further.

Still going band forth on whether I'm going to watch Westworld. The rape gave me pause, but then Thandia Newton's interview gave me the idea that this might still be women friendly after all and the rape might have a purpose rather than just thrown in there for titlation.

Also still need to watch Luke Cage.

Enjoying the new seasons of Project Runway and The Great British Bakeoff.

So I think this seems like it is probably a good tv season for me. I actually like some of the new shows this year, which hasn't happened since Galavant first aired and then before that a while.

This Is Us

[personal profile] meredith44 2016-10-08 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I enjoyed This Is Us. I don't generally go for family dramas but I had heard good things about it. I liked the characters, even if I wish there were a bit more plot.

I have a bunch of other shows on my Tivo, but work has been really awful and I haven't had a chance to watch them yet.

It's funny, because all the snarky / smark / super-tuned-in TV fans I know really, really, really hated This Is Us, and everyone else I see seems to have loved it.

Just a weird dichotomy.

I can see that. As it was definitely sweet rather than snark and one-liners. It really felt more like a slice-of-life show where you were supposed to just get to know and like the characters rather than quips and lots of plot. As I said, it isn't generally what I go for, but I liked the first couple of episodes and am interested to see where it goes from there.

Yuri on ice

(Anonymous) 2016-10-09 01:19 am (UTC)(link)

I´m completely obsessed with it! The music, the skating, the animation, the homoerotism and blatant fanservice. Yes! Sign me up!

Also Touken Ranbu Hanamaru. I don´t play the game, but I´m all for the bishonen!

I already have too many shows to watch

(Anonymous) 2016-10-09 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
The Good Place - Nice, kind of funny, could do better
Bull - like the character and his team, but the concept is already grating on me
This Is Us - sweet
Lethal Weapon - surprisingly likable, a little uneven
Designated Survivor - well-acted, interesting, but maybe a little too depressingly realistic for me
MacGyver - cheesy, but fun
Timeless - Good pilot, we'll see how it plays out
Frequency - I really liked it

Plus eight or nine returning shows I'm watching. I've got to drop some.

Well, I'm sure we know what Supernatural Sucks Anon would recommend...
