There's a lot of extras with them together on the bonus digital version, and probably the blu ray that comes out tomorrow too.

I think a lot of people took that out of context "you know science, I know the city" line in some trailer as "here's yet another stereotypical 'street smart' black character".
I was delighted when the movie clarified that she "knew the city" because she was a huge geek herself and had read all about it.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-10 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, I think they both subverted the "street smart black character" trope and played it straight in some ways. That said, I'd rather take your positive perspective than fixate on the negative.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-10 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what I thought, too. "Street smart" characters tend toward things like "I know a place we can go where somebody will know somebody who can make X happen" whereas Patty was more "On this spot in 1896..."

I know!!! I want more Patty and Holtzmann. I didn't really care for the other two characters. They reminded me of unfunny comedy sidekicks? While P and H I just genuinely enjoyed their antics.

I also found both P and H very attractive which I'm sure had very little to do with it >_>;

I didn't mind the other two, but Patty and Holtzman were definately the best. And Holtzman was completely my type.

I like them all but man...Holtzman. She was just friggin' perfect. And hot. And perfect.
*flails*

Badass blondes with some muscle and a sense of humor, especially a quirky or dark sense of humor. That's my type. And she's so it.

Whooo!

It was her way of speaking and looking and *moving*.... That really grabbed me. :) I just loved how off beat she was and yes, that's a trope 'quirky science nerd'. But she wasn't cliche, to me. Plus...her mouth. Yum. :)

I thought she was a *bit* over the top - but then, I feel everyone in that movie was bordering on caricature (and Kevin got the worst of it, tbh) but all in all she was likeble and relatable and that movie got way more shit than it should have.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-15 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Late but watch the old one again.

It was just as bad.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-10 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I honestly loved this movie and loved all the characters (though I did kind of like Holtzman the most).

I went to see it with my brother and we're buying it for each other for Christmas. >.>

I agree, overall--Patty was a total sweetheart, a total nerd, and I loved her and Holtzmann a lot (pop figurines of Patty and Holtzmann both live in sapphic bliss on my desk shelf). She was a little over the top and I think it was noticeable that 3/4 ghostbusters were scientists with exceptional capabilities and the one who wasn't a "traditionally" accomplished person was Patty, but I agree she caught more flak that she necessarily invited.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-10 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
In all fairness to the division of 'types', they did keep it the same as the original where Ernie Hudson was the only 'layman' of the group.

[personal profile] sparrow_lately 2016-10-10 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Which I do understand, but there's no reason the layman couldn't have been somebody else. Like I said, not the end of the world, but I do know why people picked up on it.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-10 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed, I think there might have been a bit of racism in the original series making the only black main character not a scientist and they could have corrected that by having Patty be one of the scientists.

On a whole though I still loved her character, because she was still smart and part of the team even without being a scientist.

Exactly! She proved her worth 100 times over. I ADORED her myself.

Yeah, I agree. I love her and I think it's important to have a layman/working class character, but there's no reason she couldn't have played Melissa McCarthy's character and vice versa.

To be fair, it sounds like she's a history major. Which, while not science, takes a fuck ton of passion and a different kind of smarts. And keeping all that knowledge in your head is quite the talent, and I'd consider it on par with what a lot of scientists do.

It's smart, but in a different way.

I wanted to see this but never got around to it! Here's hoping it comes to Netflix or something.

I didn't know what to expect from her or the movie tbh but I ended up really liking her and Holtzmann too, their moments were easily some of my fave in the movie as well, I just wish we'd gotten some more.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-11 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
I think it was lazy to have the large black woman be the working class one. Both because she was black and because she has a statuesque build.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-11 01:18 pm (UTC)(link)
... as opposed to a really high-earning, prestigious job like paranormal researcher at a community college who gets booted the second the incompetent administration realizes she's on the payroll?

(Anonymous) 2016-10-11 03:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with everything you said except your take on Ernie Hudson's character in the original. He didn't really have much of a personality, or a specific job to do (as opposed to Patty being the New York historian). Also he didn't get hardly any funny lines, whereas Patty had most of the funniest lines in the movie.
