I'll say this - I'll be happy when we can remember the good parts of the Moffat era when it's a little less immediate.

Up until Affirmative Action Marty Stu Teacher and the Transethnic, Transgender Timelords and the dancing on the Brigadier's Grave season he was quite good. He has George Lucas Syndrome though, great ideas but he needs someone to hammer the stupid wank out of them before filming.

I did love the moondragon episode though.

Me too. I'm not a big fan of his latest seasons but I adore the first two ones he was in charge of, the ones with Amy and Rory. Even at his worst he was watchable and never gave me secondhand embarrassment like many RTD era episodes did.

Hello, opposite me. I loved RTD's character writing, while Moffat often fell flat for me.

(Though I must concede I enjoyed last season. But it seems so hit-and-miss with him)

Yeah, same. I just find it really difficult to get emotionally invested in Moffat's characters across the board (same in Sherlock), whereas no matter how melodramatic and OTT RTD got, I was always rooting for the characters.

Same. It's so no-strings-attached it bugs me. I've liked RTD's writing in other stuff, too. His characters are just very human to me, and relatable.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-14 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Same. I think some people put more focus on characters and some on plot. I will gladly watch the same plot every episode if the side characters change and the main are entertaining (House, CSI, Criminal Minds, Cuthroat Kitchen all come to mind) and so I loved RTD even though he was criticized for his plots being kind of same-y.

Meanwhile I didn't really click with any of Moffat's characters and so the variety in plots didn't hold my attention.

I could have 10 more episodes of just the Doctor, Rose, Jack and Mickey being goofy and bonding, and squee with delight, and I'd not even mind the farting Aliens.

And thing is, I never found Moffat's plots to be THAT good. Like sure, he has a lot of ideas that are cool, but I always feel they end up unsatisfactory on both a plot level and n emotional level.

DA - He reminds me of Neil Gaiman in a way. Good at starting a story, but bad at follow-through.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-13 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm. I certainly don't hate Moffat. There are things I love about his writing & his showrunning (& things I hate). Nine & Ten are my favorites, but I love Eleven & Twelve too. I don't have as much of a problem with him as a lot of people do, I guess is what I'm saying. I don't love him, but I don't hate him either.

Moffat ultimately was so, so, so hit or miss for me. The things he did that I loved I really loved, and he wrote probably my favorite New Who episode (Silence/Forests). But the things I didn't like, I can't stand to watch, they:re so unpleasant. It's a tricky one.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-13 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
IA. He's far from a perfect showrunner, not every ep is memorable, but the same can be said for RTD. The same *was* said about him when he was leaving. I remember people complaining about hastily resolved arcs (like the Tinkerbell!Doctor) and weird throwaway eps like Love&Monsters. They both have their merits and their flaws, as will the new guy. I'm sure he'll be praised for the first season or two, but then people will probably be saying how much better Moffat was.

L&M: They tried.

Dobby the House Doctor: They tried drugs!

I loved Moffat as a writer for RTD's show but as a show runner he just doesn't do it for me. It felt like he was trying to go for subtle and clever but lost his notes and couldn't be bothered to watch the show so he left huge chunks out of the overall story arcs. I liked RTD's Who for being fun and entertaining more often than not and there were too few episodes like that for me in Moffat's first two series as show runner.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-13 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. Not me.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-14 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I really can't tell who wrote what from an episode alone, is it usually to watch an episode in DW and know Davies/Moffatt wrote it?

On that note, Ten started off so well for me and went down hill really fucking quickly.

By the time he was whinging about not wanting to go, I was like, "Fuck it, just regenerate already you bastard."

(Anonymous) 2016-10-14 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, yeah, I grew to hate Ten. Pity.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-14 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
It's funny, I'm exactly the opposite. I started of haaaaating 10 but ended up liking him. I don't think he'll ever be one of my favorite regenerations, but I was sad to see him go.

I find the Moffat run a bit too gloomy, but I like the characters.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-14 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you for this. I love all the seasons of New Who, but preferred his run over RTD's as a whole (mostly because I liked the "fairytale" plots, and Clara was the first companion that I saw myself in), but the fandom (before I left it) got to the point where if you said you liked Moffat's stuff, it was like saying you liked Satan, apparently.

Hi, fellow Moffat lover! I adore his writing, his characters, his attitude toward the Whoniverse - everything. I didn't hate RTD, and will always be grateful to him for bringing Who back in the way he did - but I think my heart belongs to Moffat's iteration.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-14 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
I like Moffat's run less because the characterization seems shallow and the dialogue is so glib and quippy, but I understand that that's a personal preference as opposed to a universal standard.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-14 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Generally I think Moffat's plots are more interesting, but he's pretty awful at characterization and consistency. And some of his plots are shiny on the surface and fall apart halfway through. RTD's were often simpler but the characters could usually save an otherwise boring episode.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-15 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Adore, adore, adore Moffat's storylines. All of them are my utter favorites.
