One of my coworkers has discovered internet cat memes and keeps showing me the ones she thinks are funny and it's like getting FWD: FWD: FWD: FWD: FWD: internet joke from 2006 from grandma only in real life every day and I have to keep laughing to be polite

Edit: actually I'm not sure how old she is but it's definitely the same generation as me, not exusably older or anything

Must be irritating to you that you have no power to freeze, ban, or delete stuff from her. You kinda deserve all that you get in that regard.

It's not annoying so much as awkward because I can tell she's genuinely finding them funny and I'm glad she's enjoying them! I wouldn't tell her to shut up or something. I've just seen them so many times it's an effort to laugh along as though they're fresh and respond the way I'd like to.

You've no objection to shutting up people who find stuff funny on here.

Attacking people or spamming =/= funny.

If the things they're finding funny are causing wank and stuff, sure. I'm sure someone found linebreakspam anon really funny, but it was bothering pretty much everyone else.

I'd be pretty concerned if I expected or demanded my workplace run exactly like a forum on the internet I happen to mod.

Indulging your white knighters like that, by telling them to knock it off then going all awww shucks on them when they step it up, doesn't exactly help either. Just encourages them to look for more opportunities to attack unpopular opinions. FFS, if you tell someone to knock it off either stick with that point or walk away.

I HATE that. Like when someone shows you a Youtube video they think is hilarious so you have to play along.

The even more awkward thing is the memes aren't even good ones!

On the flip side, it's kind of nice to see someone discovering them for the first time and finding it all seriously funny. But it's just such an awkward position to be in when they're trying to share something they really like and it's from like 10 years ago.

Yeah, my friend got me to watch an episode of some show she liked on youtube. I didn't get it. At all. She told me to watch another, anyway. Besides, they were short!! I still didn't get it. But it WAS short... and then I realized she had it on a playlist. After each one ended, another was going to start. And then another. It would have gone on for at least an hour. Short, my ass - the shortness of the episodes doesn't matter if there are enough of them to fill up an hour. I found an excuse to leave.

You should show her some of the old flash cartoons. I suspect the Badger Song and Magical Trevor will blow her mind.

... yeah I probably could do that, I bet she'd like the Charlie the Unicorn videos.
