Re: Things you're genuinely afraid of

Airplanes are my biggest fear because of my combination of vertigo and fear of heights. I have nightmares about them even when I'm not going to be flying any time soon. And even going to the airport to pick someone else up ends up heightening my nerves.

Anything having to do with not breathing is a big fear too. Stems from my asthma/allergies and also from almost choking as a kid. If I feel like I can't breathe I start getting nervous. Which means that any sort of chest pressure, even indigestion, can make me nervous (less so when I'm on my antidepressant, but more so right now with the steroid I'm on).

Okay, so, I read one of those choose your own adventure books as a kid. And in one of them, this kid is out skiing all day after not sleeping the night before, and when he goes to sleep, some time in the middle of the night he stops breathing and dies, and it is said to be natural causes. Ever since I read that, any time I'm just completely exhausted I have trouble getting to sleep because I'm nervous about dying in my sleep. Even though I've never heard of an actual medical thing that would make this natural causes.

Actually, also anesthesia makes me nervous. Or any idea of not being aware of what is around me and being unconscious. It is a control issue for me. I have to know what is going on, and I get nervous when I don't. Part of why I have sleep issues, though not nearly as badly as when I was a kid. I would rather die the most painful death and be aware of it than die in my sleep without knowing it was happening.
