Locked-in syndrome, and being imprisoned and tortured are two more specific scenarios I'm afraid of.
Re: Things you're genuinely afraid of
Me: Yep.
Brain: Your body might do weird things while you're unconscious.
Me: Possibly.
Brain: People are going to stare at you while your body does weird things while you're unconscious.
Me: ...
Brain: They'll probably call an ambulance and try to help you.
Me: ...
Brain: And then you'll come to like nothing happened and they'll all be angry at you for wasting their time.
Me: ...
Brain: Or you'll come to and you won't be able to speak or move and you'll have to just go along with whatever weird shit people at the hospital want to do to you because nobody will check your medical alert info or call your doctor and they'll try to bring your heart rate level with the evil drug that makes you feel like you're actually dying.
Me: So what you're saying is we should never leave the house again?
Brain: Yes.

Re: Things you're genuinely afraid of
Anything having to do with not breathing is a big fear too. Stems from my asthma/allergies and also from almost choking as a kid. If I feel like I can't breathe I start getting nervous. Which means that any sort of chest pressure, even indigestion, can make me nervous (less so when I'm on my antidepressant, but more so right now with the steroid I'm on).
Okay, so, I read one of those choose your own adventure books as a kid. And in one of them, this kid is out skiing all day after not sleeping the night before, and when he goes to sleep, some time in the middle of the night he stops breathing and dies, and it is said to be natural causes. Ever since I read that, any time I'm just completely exhausted I have trouble getting to sleep because I'm nervous about dying in my sleep. Even though I've never heard of an actual medical thing that would make this natural causes.
Actually, also anesthesia makes me nervous. Or any idea of not being aware of what is around me and being unconscious. It is a control issue for me. I have to know what is going on, and I get nervous when I don't. Part of why I have sleep issues, though not nearly as badly as when I was a kid. I would rather die the most painful death and be aware of it than die in my sleep without knowing it was happening.

Re: Things you're genuinely afraid of
Losing my pension (I think it's less likely, though I have not got any letters from Centrelink since the phone appointment, meanwhile I have had two pays that are still at full pension level).
Indoor lightening strikes during electric storms - somewhat irrational though not impossible (it travels through wiring and water).
Falling down an escalator - I think this is a rational outgrowth of my fear of heights. Also, it's always downwards escalators.
Trump being voted in, causing World War 3.
The end of the world - which I would like to state is something of a religious fear, and comes coupled with worries about not going to Heaven.
Re: Things you're genuinely afraid of
See the thing is when it's dark, and I'm alone, anything can be scary, but I have one specific fear that never not comes up.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-21 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)Are you afraid of responsibility? If you are, then you have hypengyophobia.
I don't think that's quite it.
How about cats? If you're afraid of cats, you have ailurophasia.
Well, sort of, but I'm not sure.
Are you afraid of staircases? If you are, then you have climacaphobia. Maybe you have thalassophobia. This is fear of the ocean, or gephyrobia, which is the fear of crossing bridges. Or maybe you have pantophobia. Do you think you have pantophobia?
What's pantophobia?
The fear of everything.
THAT'S IT!
But generally my biggest fear is that one of my pets has died and I don't know it yet so I'm just being happy and having a good time not even knowing what's happened.
