Never read these as a kid either, but that is some seriously adorable cover art right there.

They are largely boring and repetitive. I thought that even as a child reading them for the first time. For some reason I still read like 75% of the series though.

They're not terrible, but it's clear the author is better at building worlds than telling stories within them. He has one formula and sticks to it all the time. The first one or two are nice before you start picking up on it and being able to predict the whole book.

Yeah, I liked it as a kid, but I really don't remember it very fondly compared to a lot of others. What I really loved about it was the atmosphere and the feeling - the coziness, and then really especially the feasts. But they just don't hold up.

I've never heard of it, but I'm a fan of mice with swords.

In that case, you probably already know MouseGuard?

I feel the same way about the Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper.

In the olden days books were written to appeal to children only. There was none of this modern-day need to make something cross-generationally appealing because back in the day, nobody over the age of thirteen would voluntarily read a children's book for their own enjoyment.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-23 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmm. I see your point, but I think the Cooper series holds up a little better than Redwall. Probably because it's a bit more complex in the first place.

I devoured Redwall when I was a kid, then I tried reading the others in the series and couldn't get through them. There was something about Redwall.

NGL, when I read these as a kid they were pretty dope.

But I fully accept the fact that they may not have held up over time.

I only read one of these books and the only thing I remember is that I was terrified of drowning afterwards. I still am to be honest. Thanks redwall

Who is this 'everyone' you speak of, where can I find them.

Also; fair enough. They are children's books. Bye?

I could have made this secret in my sleep. I tried to pick up one of these as an adult and I just couldn't get into it. There are other things I feel this way about too. Like Animorphs. Never a part of my childhood so I could never get into them as an adult.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-23 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I probably would have read these if I'd seen that cover art. The editions here have Generic Fantasy Novel™ covers and I honestly can't remember having ever heard of this series before the author died.

I sort of always meant to read those when I was a kid and never did, and curiously picked up the first book at the store recently... I was not impressed by the writing, so I guess I missed out on enjoying it when I was too young to care.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-23 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually tried them as a kid, but never got into them. I can't remember why, I just remember really not liking the first one I tried.

I also had Brian Jacques confused with Robin Jarvis for years, though I liked a couple of Jarvis' stuff (I read The Alchemyst's Cat young, and it did traumatise me a bit but I remember liking it). I'm still not sure just why I didn't like Redwall.

oh lawks I have so many of these books. I can see how reading them for the first time as an adult might not really give you a taste for it, since they are written for kids. The nostalgia and worldbuilding overpowers the weak points of the series for me personally, but I get that not everyone is gonna like 'em.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-23 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to love these as a kid, but now as an adult I doubt I would find them that entertaining.

I think I was the only little girl not into animal stories. Especially horsies. Oh my god I was never into horsies. Maybe because I lived on an acreage? Horsies smell funny and have big chompers. Cats are adorable, but I never felt the need to anthropomorphize them.

In middle school, that special age where kids turn into total shits, our spinster teacher read us what I think was Watership Down. I don't know, I was always bored to tears when listening to people reading aloud. Anyway, the other kids would snicker and make fun of her because she was so emotionally attached to the characters and choked back tears when they died.

Never read the book, but I watch the tv (animated series). I think I enjoyed it? I certainly remember it and wish I could rewatch. Maybe that might be nice?

(Anonymous) 2016-10-24 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
I read quite a few as a kid. Whenever we got a new one in our library I'd check it out. But I ended up disliking a lot of the tropes, especially how predatory animals were always evil. The ending of Outcast of Redwall soured me on the whole series.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-24 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Can't say I've ever heard of these books.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-24 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
I should have been all over these books as a kid. Seriously, this shit was right up my alley and I think if I was maybe three years younger than I am it would have been fine. But I tried, and I think I was maybe a leetle too old, because holy hell. So slow. So boring.
