Well, having been through something similar quite recently, it's really just best to be forthright. If you don't have time, you don't have time.

It's unfortunate, but sometimes irl duties have to come first. Maybe you can pick up rping on breaks or do short plot arcs if you have some spare time, but it's only going to turn out badly if you just kind of stop showing up or try to make hollow excuses. If you don't want your partner to assume they did something wrong, just tell them the truth.
