To what extent do you think fandom would exist if the ethos underlining all activity was, "I should get paid for this?"

Its not this artists responsibility to make sure fandom exists. Stop putting the life and death of your fandom on this one random artist who realized people were willing to pay for her work.

Yes, plenty of people do it for free. That does not mean everyone will or should. Get over yourself.

Again: if no one did anything for free in fandom, would fandom exist?

Do you think people should charge to make secrets for this site?

Probably not, but why are you conflating one person not doing something for free to no one ever doing something for free?

Oh, maybe because one of the most basic tests of whether an action is ethical is to ask "what would happen if everybody did that?"

There is no ethical consumption under capitalism

We were talking about production, not consumption.

Oh shit guys its the fandom ethics police.

Fandom not existing would not be unethical. Perhaps you wouldn't like it, but it would not be unethical.

Other sites pay for photoplasty stuff like Cracked and they're much bigger, get more hits and views because the overall quality is better.

I mean fandom wouldn't exist if people couldn't make money on the original stuff that we're fans of. Think Harry Potter would have been such a big thing if it was just some obscure bit of original fiction on LJ? How would Star Trek get made without actors, scriptwriters, and a network to host it?

You're ignoring the other side of the coin. When someone thinks, "I should get paid for this," they're also thinking, "I really don't want to do this any more unless I'm paid, because doing it for free is no longer worth it to me."

For people already in that position, if they didn't have a Patreon, they would stop making art entirely.

Fandom would exist, but a lot of artists who are making great stuff on Patreon would no longer be a part of it or contributing anything any more, paid or free.
