I strongly disagree that earning money makes you a sell out. You buy things. Are all the companies/people your money goes to "selling out" by daring to try and make a living from what they do? Do you have a job, or do you plan to have one someday? Are you going to work for free?

That said, nobody's under any obligation to support someone via Patreon. It's up to the individual. As for "contributing to a problem" in the sense that her supporters are young and broke, that's not her problem. She is NOT responsible for how other people choose to spend their money. It's not at all uncommon for people (of all ages, in and out of fandom) to spend their money in less than smart ways, and that is 100% on them.

Along those lines, it simply isn't reasonable to expect a person to keep a fandom alive. Especially if it means forgoing potential income. No artist or writer is obligated to keep churning out their work for free, just to please fandom.
