English should just get rid of gendered pronouns altogether

Wouldn't that just contribute to transgender people getting misgendered? Degendering is a genuine problem, especially (but not always) for trans women, who are treated as "not women".

Calling a woman the singular "they" doesn't make them not a woman if you call everyone "them" though. People already do it sometimes.

Eh, maybe?

That being said, pronouns are pretty important; why else would misgendering someone be a problem?

I'd argue that having a wide-spread, non-gendered pronoun become mainstream would be better then just abolishing gendered pronouns all together.

I think ariakas was implying the wide spread mainstream non-gender pronoun would replace the gendered pronouns, thereby abolishing them.

I just don't see it happening.

I mean, right now, people who use one pronoun will sometimes realize that pronoun doesn't fit, and look for something that fits better; I don't see that changing. What if someone doesn't feel like a "they". The pronouns won't completely vanish, unless we get collective amnesia, so someone might stumble on "she" and think "shit, that's me."

Haha well, I don't see it happening either but the thread wasn't about practical reforms with a 5-year plan for implementation with majority consensus or none of the responses would apply.

Yeah but then you can still have shitheads elect to use the wrong one on people they don't feel perform the one they prefer effectively enough.

And other, non-shitheads might still feel insulted or degraded or reminded they aren't "good enough" to pass if people use the non-gendered one on them to start.

You can't misgender someone with pronouns if everyone uses the same pronouns, though?

I just don't see it happening unless we as a society get collective amnesia, and forget about gendered pronouns. Elsewise, someone will probably find she/her, he/him, and think "hey, this feels like me."

I mean, that's what already happens nowadays.

But why would they do that? "S/he" is just a word. It means what society imparts upon it.

"She" in a vacuum means fuck all. What your society decides a "woman" is what gets shoehorned through the collective unconscious onto that term.

If someone "found" a gendered pronoun but didn't have the gendered tropes attached to it, in their mind, it wouldn't feel like anything at all. On it's own it's an aspirated consonant and a vowel.

It sounds like you're also thinking that gender should be abolished?

Otherwise, someone who identifies as woman/wants to, might read "she" as a pronoun for "women" and identify with it. It's exactly what happens nowadays with transgender people, who see something/feel like they identify with something.

Taking away the pronouns won't do anything unless gender is abolished.

It'd make life easier. You wouldn't have to fuss about pronouns when first encountering someone. And there are languages that don't have them - some of which, I might add, belong to cultures with extremely high level of gender equality. There are scads of studies that demonstrate that words do affect the way we think, right down to our ability to recognize differences in shades.

So "won't do anything" is obviously false - I think you mean "won't complete eliminate the problem"? Which, well, no. People are shitheads. We love to use our differences as a way to make ourselves feel superior to others.

It's either no gendered pronouns or we go full Tumblr and create a pronoun for people who don't give a fuck and want to opt out of the entire shitshow that is sex-linked gender performance. People could opt in if it felt important to them and others could just be male/female/intersex attack helicopters.

Where can I sign up for attack helicopter gender? Sounds rad, man.
