People say stuff. That's all there is to it. I'm sure they didn't intend to be jerks about it. In many cases, at least with me, it's not even that they don't WANT to, but because they're not super interested in the thing, it's their absolute last priority after everything else.
Which is why I just don't send people stuff, and that's that.
And yes, it hurts. It hurts a lot, and it sucks, and I really feel for OP.

And yes, there may be extenuating circumstances - maybe the book is shit. Maybe it's not at all similar to stuff their fandom friends like. But there' a lot of speculation there, I'm just going off of what we do know.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-31 12:10 am (UTC)(link)Listen. I've dealt with these kinds of people. They take any vague interest and take it as an obligation.

So clearly this *can* happen, even when somebody is not being demanding or viewing everything as a contract inked in blood.
Hell, it happened to me a month ago. I mentioned a story I was working on to a friend, and she asked a bunch of questions and seemed really interested. Then she said she wants to read it, and I downplayed and said nevermind, I don't like showing my work, it's incomplete, yadda yadda. Whatever, she insisted that she really does want to read it and she does care, and finally I relented. I even told her that she's not obligated to *like* the story, she can quit after a page if she wants, I have no problems with that - I know different people like different things.
Guess who hasn't even looked at the story.
