Yeah like when she gave away the money that Walt was saving to get his family to safety.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-12 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Did she know that's what it was for?

(Anonymous) 2016-11-12 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
She could have asked.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-12 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
She was trying to protect them, she didn't use it to buy herself a new car or something

I'm convinced Skyler was written that way because we're supposed to be experiencing the story from Walt's perspective. Hence, anyone attempting to be the voice of reason gets mutated into a screeching harpy (in Skyler's case) or an idiot manchild (in Jesse's case) or an overzealous asshole bully (in Hank's case).

But you know, we're the audience so we have the ability to read between the lines, ostensibly. I felt like anyone who doesn't really have a developed understanding of narrative style probably missed this and took everyone's character in this show at face value. ...Now granted, it doesn't actually make them less horrible to watch, but interrogating it from that perspective allowed me to get through the whole thing without being aggravated too much lol.

you are wrong

(Anonymous) 2016-11-12 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Correct.

Agreed. I hated both Marie and Hank and I wish they'd died.

50% of the people you just mentioned did die.

As much as I disliked Hank, he had a great death scene.

I sorta agree with you

I think Skyler gets a lot of unwarranted hate (especially by people who try to white-wash everything Walt does post season 1. Seriously, the man tried to sexually assault his pregnant wife and manipulates basically everyone he comes into contact with. He's the kind of character who I find interesting, but I would stay FAR FAR away from if I encountered him in real life).

I think Marie is more annoying than Skyler, but I feel kinda sympathetic towards her as well. They eventually revealed that her kleptomania is a geniune compulsion for her (not that it made her refusal to admit to Skyler that she did streal and apologize any less wrong) and she took a lot of verbal abuse from Hank as he was recovering.

God, I need to finish this show. :\

I actually really liked Marie, at least in the first few seasons? idk, she got a huge pass from me just because of how she handled finding out about Walt's cancer. It was just so damn nice to finally have a character be like "hey, you know, actually these 'life saving treatments' are horrifically painful and will bankrupt your family, and probably wouldn't save him anyway, so maybe we should respect his wishes?".

(Anonymous) 2016-11-13 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
That came off as creepy to me, and cemented my dislike of her from the start. Marie is weird, and I mean that as negatively as possible. Sorry, I don't think it's okay for someone to announce they have cancer and you to go "yes it's probably better if you just die". Marie also tends to get very "know-it-all" about health issues, being a nurse herself, so the dialogue struck me as a lot more of her trying to take control of the conversation rather than have any genuine concern for Walt.

I will grant that it makes her an interesting character, but she is obnoxious as fuck.

Completely agreed. Anon above you somehow paraphrased that as "it's better if you die," which I disagree with. I think that the person who has the disease has the most right to determine how to fight the disease, and also to make the decision that quality of life may trump quantity. Living at any cost is sometimes a terrible choice, and for Americans it can also bankrupt the survivors (which is a sad and wacky thing for such a rich country, but that's a topic for another thread). I thought it was kind of refreshing to see someone actually asking the sufferer "how do YOU feel about this?"

Skylar really isn't innocent or particularly altruistic, though. I do think she's interesting, because in season 1, I am fairly confident she was written with the intent of making the audience hate her - nagging wife without any real redeemable qualities. But the interesting shift is how the further off the deep end Walter goes, the more you like Skylar - and the darker Skylar's life gets, the more you really want to be on her side. I can't imagine a typical viewer hates her beyond the first two seasons, unless she really left a bad taste in their mouth to start with.
