Is the movie out yet? If not, is this in the trailer? And you know that scenes in a trailer can be out of context, right?

It was released in the U.S. yesterday (with showings before that on Tuesday)

Also, this secret would've had to be submitted last Saturday, so doubtless, OP had not seen it at the time and simply chose this image to illustrate what they're talking about. I don't think Moana + Maui are supposed to be an example per se so much as a convenient image.

It's completely out of context. Within context it doesn't fit what OP is complaining about at all.

I hate when female characters slap male characters. It happened twice in Thor 2 and both times were so cringy.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-25 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Keira Knightly slapped Adam Levine (can't remember their characters' names) in Begin Again. Adam responded, "What the fuck is wrong with you?"

That seemed like an appropriate response. I mean, what else is there to say without giving someone a lecture? And you can't have a movie come to a screeching halt for a character to lecture another about domestic violence.

Yeah that was my #1 problem with Thor 2. It feels especially out of place because Thor 1 was basically "Thor claws his way out of metaphorical toxic masculinity" and both movies do a pretty good job with their women characters (not perfect, but better than the average Hollywood blockbuster). But hahaha women slapping men is funny, right?

I can't remember the other occasion but it would be very very hard not to slap Loki. Then again I'd probably knee him in the balls. If assaulting a fictional character that killed thousands of humans and tried to blow up earth is a crime well, lock me up. Under other circumstances, no, it's not a good look.

(The thing that got me was the way the shot was set up to disguise how much shorter Natalie Portman is than Tom Hiddleston looked absolutely ridiculous and clearly fake.)

When Jane slapped Loki? How was that crappy of her? He tried to destroy her planet.

The Thor slap was stupid though.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-24 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's not the best thing but it's not the end of the world either. We should move away from it if we can.

Yeah, this.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-24 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. It models abusive behavior dismissed as funny, and honestly I feel it is such a weak way of portraying women as strong, because the inherent joke is that women are weak so it's funny to see them act aggressive. Just gross all around.

[personal profile] morieris 2016-11-25 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Basically. Luckily this is the only instance of this. The rest is slapstick that happens to both characters.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-25 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
It's like the "Sexual assault is funny if it happens to a man" romcom trope. Boo.

She was standing up for herself, not abiding him unnecessarily. I don't see you making secrets of him throwing her out of her own boat?!?

(Anonymous) 2016-11-25 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
Probably because the secret was made before the film came out, Sherlock.

She had every right to behave the way she did toward Maui. In no way was she 'physically abusive toward' him. Hell, he's the one who kept repeatedly throwing her out of her own boat.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-25 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
he threw her off a boat

in the middle of the ocean

her boat

that kills people, carl

(Anonymous) 2016-11-25 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, he had no idea she was friends with the ocean. Just threw her off and got ready to sail away.

Not cool.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-25 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. Not just females hitting males, but also males hitting males.
I don't find it funny. People like to dismiss it as slapstick but in general I think you shouldn't hit anyone unless it's in defense.

Well... playful hits that don't hurt are okay, but smacking in the face, punching, and kicking are where I draw the line.

[personal profile] thelesbianfuturist 2016-11-25 07:59 am (UTC)(link)
Dammit, this isn't going to help my budding reputation as a feminazi...

Ok, so while I understand and respect what you're saying I think you are missing an important element: What kind of message does this send to young boys. Because While I see where you're coming from in that we shouldn't be teaching women to measure strength by the male standard, men and boys DO measure strength my the male standard. So the message they are taking away might well be that women can and will beat your ass like a drum if you act like a dickhead to them.

This isn't the worst message to give young boys.

I completely agree - for me the worst incidence of this sort of 'physical abuse is fine if it's female on male' attitude was when Peggy Carter FIRED A GUN at Steve Rogers because some other woman and he were flirting, and it was just treated like it was a ~sassy moment~
