People who don't understand why anyone would vote for Trump, but overlook Fidel Castro's human rights violations the same way Trump supporters overlook Trump's issues.

It's the same damn mentality, people. You're overlooking huge problems in favor of your own personal causes. Not okay.

Why ARE people overlooking Castro's human rights violations? I can't figure it out.

nayrt but I think looking at Castro as a black and white issue isn't useful. We absolutely should talk about the atrocities and human rights violations he committed. But he also has a lot of love in Cuba, and it's okay to examine why that would be, too. Sometimes people do both good shit and bad shit, and when it isn't in our power to punish them for the bad shit, all we can do is look at them in context.

So this should apply to Trump, too, then, as AIRT pointed out.

Sort of, but Trump's hardly got a reign to look back at retrospectively at this point, we do have the power (of sorts) to hold him accountable for or prevent his atrocities, and he's done basically nothing good to contribute, build up, and improve the country. It's important not to look at people in black and white, but this isn't an excuse to just chill and "see what happens". If Castro became the US president, you'd better believe people would be protesting, and they absolutely should be protesting a Trump presidency, too.

Nah, you're just a hypocrite.

Lol nothing I said was remotely inconsistent. Re-read, best of luck.

I saw a lot of rationalizing and excuse-making, very typical of the new left. Keep it up, it's doing wonders for your party.

See, now you're just going full troll, rather than actually engage the issue.

Because the regime he replaced was even worse, and half the horrible things he did were in response to the US illegal blockade too. If we'd pulled out of Gitmo and not been such dumbasses over Cuba choosing Russia instead of us, and worse not letting itself get reconquered by the US like most of Central America, chances are it is a problem that would have solved itself before the 1960s were finished. Our stubborn my-way-or-the-highway approach to Cuba and our inability to admit when we screwed up really made things worse there, and we're repeating the same mistake in Afghanistan too because we cannot admit we blundered into an unwinnable war there with no exit plan in place first.

People are over the "America as the root of all evil" narrative. Try something new or STFU.

Blaming the US trade embargo is disingenuous at best when you consider that it only applied between the US and Cuba. Cuba has plenty of allies in Central and South America, and they're free to do business with the rest of the world. They get millions of tourists a year. Cuba's problems are a direct result of failed economic policy, corruption and a 50+ year dictator and his friends looting the country.

I have to admit I had to look on Doomworld of all places to find people praising Castro. Most leftists I know hate him.

I know there's dumbass teenagers in Che shirts who're all sad now but that's because they have a ludicrously simple worldview, informed by Star Wars' "Evil Empire vs Plucky Rebel Force" dichotomy.
