I'd certainly think so! After all, Troi goes through as much chocolate as she does and keeps a svelte physique. It seems like a logical progression that computer-generated food would be able to be managed down to the microns to be anything you want it to be.

That's exactly the example I was going to bring up for the opposite point.

Troi complains that the chocolate doesn't taste right, because it's nutritionally balanced &c.

So it seems that just like in the real world, you have to choose one of the other - 'lite' or 'tastes right', not both.

DA Yeah there are multiple references to the replicator not always getting things exactly right (and the nutrition being part of that), and some crew even like to get their hands on the real thing if they can.

I don't think it's something they find excessively bothersome, since they use the replicators all the time. I don't even know that we could say for sure how it would taste, like I try to imagine diet food but I would hope the replicators would be a little more advanced and could get close to the real thing, just not exact.

I seem to remember someone (Troi, possibly) asking for a dish that the replicator wouldn't serve because that person needed to slim down/cut back a little. So the replicators may be managing your diet for you, in cooperation with the doctor ;)

I would definitely hope so, anon! Food technology is pretty amazing stuff, and soy-based meat substitutes do not get the love they should, for starters.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-13 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe because soy "chicken" for instance doesn't taste anything like chicken. It doesn't even taste like soy.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-13 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
You're right, soy based meat substitutes do not get the love they deserve. They get far, far, far more. Bleh.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-14 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
At least, if you're not allergic to soy. I wish I could find a non-soy, non bean BEEF alternative. It'd be nice to have something with the texture of hamburger without the grease of hamburger.

I've never had a meat substitute that tasted like meat, but I like some of them anyway, just on their own merits (I'm not a vegetarian, but will eat meat substitutes sometimes).

Same. I haven't had fake chicken in a while but I kind of miss it even though it's not really anything like chicken.

I grew up with meat substitutes, they were mostly gluten and peanut based. I still like them, and it not because they are anything like meat, because they aren't, they just taste good.

Sadly, there are those of us who can't eat soy. There are a couple of other meat substitutes I like, but I have limited options.

Look, I love tofu, it's fantastic when prepared properly. But soy-based meat substitutes don't get love because they're terrible.

It is a universe where a doctor on a backwater brokedown space station can perform a total sexchange in an afternoon, I think they are good on the weight loss front. Even if the foods are zero calorie, the cosmetic surgery capabilities are more than up to tackling any weight gain. I mean, just how many overweight women did we see in the Federation in Star Trek, I can't remember really any? Of course Starfleet having a uniform so tight that you could see the actress' belly button through them probably contributes to the diet plan.

Embarrassing? I'm pretty sure literally everyone would do the same thing if they had a food maker that was able to do so. I know I would try.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-14 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Everyone seems to value and prefer fresh food, though, so I suspect replicator food is never quite right. But while you have to eat replicator food anyway, why not micromanage it?

(Anonymous) 2016-12-14 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe replicators are crap at fresh food and awesome at processed junk food? Like, if you wanted chicken soup like your grandma made or chocolate cake like that one bakery in Paris makes or something, you're shit outta luck, but it can churn out cup noodles or hostess cupcakes by the ton that are indistinguishable from the "real" fakes? I'd be sad because there's plenty of high calorie real foods that I love but on the other hand, if replicators could produce negligible-calorie junk food, no-one would have to worry nearly as much about empty calories.

The future could be soooo beautiful if this would happen.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-14 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Sort of along the same lines: every time I have to wax my legs I always think about if I lived in Star Trek they'd probably have super easy/permanent hair removal. Literally the number one reason I'd want to live in that future.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-21 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
SAME

(Anonymous) 2016-12-14 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
I could swear that I read somewhere that the replicators on the ship monitored the caloric needs of the crew members and adjusted the calorie content of their foods accordingly.

Aww, this is adorable

Good luck on your diet, OP! I hope everything goes well. If you're on a diet to lose weight, why not just count your calories and fit in some good stuff every once in a while? Cheat days are also important! If your diet is for something else, then I hope for the best anyway.

Either way, lots of <3 @ u

Replicators can be used to make any food you want with the appropriate nutritional values. You don't have to ask it to make low-calorie food. The machine will know what you need so that you can eat a smorgasbord without worries. Chow down!
