I would definitely hope so, anon! Food technology is pretty amazing stuff, and soy-based meat substitutes do not get the love they should, for starters.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-13 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe because soy "chicken" for instance doesn't taste anything like chicken. It doesn't even taste like soy.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-13 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
You're right, soy based meat substitutes do not get the love they deserve. They get far, far, far more. Bleh.

At least, if you're not allergic to soy. I wish I could find a non-soy, non bean BEEF alternative. It'd be nice to have something with the texture of hamburger without the grease of hamburger.

I actually think quorn works really well, at least as a substitute for beef in Bolognese sauce. You can get it made as patties too, but I haven't tried those.
There's also seitan, but that's mostly made to resemble chicken or duck (that I have seen at least).

I've never had a meat substitute that tasted like meat, but I like some of them anyway, just on their own merits (I'm not a vegetarian, but will eat meat substitutes sometimes).

Same. I haven't had fake chicken in a while but I kind of miss it even though it's not really anything like chicken.

I was surprised to find that I liked Quorn as much as I did.

I grew up with meat substitutes, they were mostly gluten and peanut based. I still like them, and it not because they are anything like meat, because they aren't, they just taste good.

Sadly, there are those of us who can't eat soy. There are a couple of other meat substitutes I like, but I have limited options.

Seitan is a great, versatile, non-soy based alternative.

I've heard it is, but I'm really picky with texture, and it just looks like something I couldn't handle so I have yet to try it. Maybe I will one of these days. I rely too much on cheese.

Only if you're not gluten intolerant.

But I love gluten steaks. I miss them.

Look, I love tofu, it's fantastic when prepared properly. But soy-based meat substitutes don't get love because they're terrible.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-14 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. Tofu is delicious, but any of those soy-based meat substitutes? Hell nah.
