I hated that ending too, and it was so unnecessary. All we needed to see was her walking away from Sarah/Becky/Captain Crewe into the rain, alone with her hate. That was perfect.

That she ends up a chimney sweep is stupid and cartoonish and ruins the whole thing. I'd quite happily pay full price for a DVD version that snips out that one awful scene.

Yeah, I know it's just there because it's supposed to be funny and ironic, but that part doesn't feel like it fits with the movie's humor style. It's too cartoony.

I just remembered that I had the novelization of the movie (definitely not to be confused with the original book) and unless I totally forgot, that part isn't in it. So the weirdness might have something to do with it being thrown into the script later on.

The whole movie ending is changed. In the book, her father isn't even alive. The father alive thing started with the Shirley Temple version, I believe. But even that version didn't do the whole chimney sweep thing.

Oh I know, I've read the original book too and like it much more than both movies. But the novelization I'm talking about was based almost word for word on the 1993 movie.

Not really, it's on a par with Sara pretending to put some sort of Indian curse on Lavinia. In other words, inane.

The pretend curse is inane as far as it adds nothing to the story, but it's something that a person could easily do and is pretty in-character for movie-Sara. It doesn't require any suspension of disbelief like Minchin becoming a chimneysweep does.

I guess to me it only requires you imagine a scenario where the school collapses because (a) Miss Minchin no longer has her sister and the free (or nearly free) labor of Sara and Becky to rely on and (b) when the story of how she mistreated a pupil who's fallen on hard times got out, the reputation of her school was ruined and parents pulled their daughters out.

I love this movie and have watched it countless times, but yeah, that scene always seemed so weird to me. I guess I wanted to know how she got ruined so badly that she had to resort to chimney sweeping.

I always thought Sara's dad had something to do with it. Like a name and shame type of thing.

I think it's because Alfonso Cuaron put in each individual plot element for its immediate effect, regardless of whether it contributed to the story as a whole. I found this to be the case with his fucking-up of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban as well. It's visually stunning but you end up without a clue as to what's going on unless you read the book.

Also, because he had no understanding--zip, zero, and zilch--of what A Little Princess is about.
