DnD had me annoyed right through the whole of 4th Edition for what looked, to me, like they wanted to remove all nuance from their most popular "Always Chaotic Evil" race that always had a huge pile of Good Guys who went rogue. Back in 3rd Edition, the Drow had at least three deities that hated Lolth, but in the fluff leading into 4E all of them were killed off. 5E appears to have brought back two of them at least, as well as several other dead gods.

I know people riffed on the Drow a lot for Drizzt and all the other "Good Drow", but I appreciated that they were an example of a Chaotic Evil race that did have those rogues.

Oh Jesus, like I needed another reason to dislike 4th but I've been given a new one! Because seriously? I mean yeah the Good Drow thing is a bit silly sometimes but even for a race as bad as Drow there will always be outliers, it's just silly to go with that they're all bad because that's not how individuality works.

The only races I'd question on the not always being bad thing is Demons, but that's more because they aren't a race in the same way the mortal ones are, same for angels, but then my angels tend to skirt more towards Lawful than Good.

Yeah, and while only one of those three gods was Good, Eilistraee, but the whole dynamic between her, Vhaeraun and Lolth made an interesting background, and the idea of an Evil male god as an outlet for Drow who were disgruntled at the Lolthian rule was something I liked. I think Kiaransalee was only a small-time player, so I'm not really put out by her not being brought back - Eilistraee and Vhaeraun have a lot more story surrounding them and from what I can find, they now have an understanding since their return.

After some of the D&D related videos I've seen, Angels and Demons are races that can be worked in some interesting ways. Angels are a Big Picture race which an encounter with for a random mortal adventure group may nit be a pleasant thing. Devils (the Lawful Evil ones), can be working from deep behind a seemingly innocent front.

But I do agree on them that they are far more bound to their alignments than the more mundane races.

Yeah that messy tangle was always so appealing and it made sense that the Drow would have more than just the one god and some would defect because they wouldn't agree or like the majority rule. It's good they decided to bring them both back though, I can't believe they thought it would be good to get rid of them. Evil mortal races are way more variable bro.

Oh I can see that and it makes for some interesting possibilities as well. Like a LE demon could hide for centuries under a pleasant front while it spins its web and an angel could be a truly terrifyingly cold creature for a good party to deal with.

Yeah, that's the core of my beef against 4E - it cut down a lot of interesting gods, merged several who shared portfolios, and had me confused for a long time as to what Eldrin were, which I had an attachment to from 3E for being CG celestials (they have ended up as Fey and the whole Elven pantheon has basically been rebranded as Fey too). I don't know how much of the changes for 5E are clarifications and how much is rolling back changes Wizards of the Coast got complaints about, but from the perspective I have (which is a bit outsider), the changes are good and have brought back good stuff.

Eladrin, that is. My fondness for them stemmed from a mix of the Monster Manual and thePlanar Handbook - both 3E. I am considering getting the 5E books.

I found the Eladrin being pulled in as a player-race, a non-level adjustment one anyway, to be really confusing as well. Like you I remember them being extraplanar creatures, to me it's like they wanted something 'cooler' than elves, but elves are already cool guys.

I've read through the 5E PHB and I liked what've I've read so far, they've made some changes to the base classes but it still works in a way that I can figure out, oh and there's some more base variation with the elven races when in 3E it was High Elf and you had to figure out what stat bonuses and lvl-adjustment(if any) you needed to apply for other elf-variations. Now you can be a Drow without being 2 levels behind! Which I like(do miss the 120ft darkvision though but can't have it all).
