Fandom Secrets is the only place I post where I've seen anyone mention the existence of negative reactions to this movie, never mind seen any actual negative reactions.

So what you dressing your little boy up as for Halloween? Not a character from Moana.

The lack of positive reactions is a different subject from any negative reactions. Frankly, I think that stems from large portions of American (and probably global?) audiences not being interested in learning about cultures they didn't already learn about as kids.

Not sure what a poor merchandise choice is proof of...other than a poor merchandise choice for an otherwise good movie

It was standard merch, but the SJWs threw they usual fit over shit that it got yanked and Disney buried the movie.

People like to bring up "the SJWs" as a group that has power and influence over the content of media, and I'm not convinced that's true. They speak about the content of media, but I'm not convinced anyone listens.

It wasn't "the SJWs," it was normal people who look at Halloween costumes to buy for their kids.

Oh, that mess. I didn't think of it because it relates to merchandising outside the movie itself.

Disney would fire you for that sentiment if you worked for them. The merch and the movie are one.

Well uh, considering I've had people link me Jezebel articles loosely about you better not buy Moana costumes for your kids you white pieces of trash I'd say there's probably a bit of it out there than you've noticed...

I checked the "Moana" tag on Jezebel, but nothing like that came up. I couldn't find anything like that under "costumes" or "the Disney store," either. I found this on The Mary Sue, but honestly, I'm not sure what you would expect me to disagree with: http://www.themarysue.com/disney-racist-maui-costume/

At this point it might have been retroactively deleted (wouldn't be the first time for Jezebel to take down an opinion piece if it didn't get the kind of reception they were hoping).

I swear it existed though. It was literally someone telling people they couldn't buy Moana costumes for their kids if they were white because that was cultural appropriation.

I do remember seeing something circulating on Tumblr about 'don't buy Moana merch because appropriation' and thinking 'yes, genius, don't buy any merchandise for the movie starring a POC because that will definitely show Disney that it's worth it to make more non-white protagonists.'

Same. They obviously exist and seems people mentioned them. Did not see the film nor do I know enough about pacific islands in general to comment. They seemed not to have made a dent. The only drama I remember was with Princess and Frog before it launched as they changed love interest's design.
