Re: 2016 confessions & unpopular opinions

In the Russosphere (is that a thing?) most people seem to be very excited about Trump. The election was followed very closely.

Jackass joke politicians are nothing new, but the general consensus is that Trump might be a fool but he's a fool that a) actually really does want to do good things for America, and b) really doesn't want to perpetuate the cold war. Many Russians think that between Putin and Trump, Russia might finally manage to shake off some of the trade policies and international suspicion that have kept the country in a perpetual economic depression. Like, this isn't people typically optimistic about politics (or optimistic about anything for that matter), so the number of "Russia is saved! We're going to be best friends with America and we'll go on picnics together and we'll go to space together and we can end terrorism together and no one will ever be sad again and it will be GREAT!" type comments I've seen is pretty shocking.

(Also, Clinton and Obama have both made statements that basically amount to 'well if Russia keeps doing stuff war is inevitable', which needless to say is pretty terrifying to people over there and they've become fairly unpopular.)

But I haven't seen anyone suggest that Putin is supporting Trump because he thinks it will destabilize America. The consensus actually seems to be the opposite, that Trump will fix a lot of economic policy and in doing so help both poor Americans and poor Russians. ofc Putin is one of the most brilliant politicians of the century, so I'm sure he has plots within plots.

... I forgot where i was going with this. I guess just, you might be right but I'm not sure it's that simple.

That's actually kinda heartwarming. I mean, I firmly believe that Trump is a disaster, but the one bright point I see in all of his idiocy is that he at least might keep a good tone with Putin and keep THAT brand of foreign policy at relative peace :/

Sure, this is true. What's also prudent to remember though, is the number of young voters that have been shockingly excited about anything Putin and everything Putin does (cult of personality etc). If he implies the Russian and US economies are going to be "fixed" because of Trump... well obviously it must be true, right?

What's more likely - and has been more likely for years - is Putin continuing to play at chess with countries like Syria and North Korea (just google how many of his associates take political trips there) an a attempt to engage American troops and distract from his actual goals of expansionism and fairly blatant return to Soviet-style leadership. See: the Ukraine conflicts. The Obama administration had goals that opposed this, and was also informed enough to recognize the possibility of enmity in Putin's camp.

I'm not banking on Trump's team of fuckheads and professional hate mongers to even realize that Putin might have ulterior motives. So yes, putting Trump in power benefits his goals in more than one way. I mean, absolutely, I'm not Russian. I'm not in Russia. I'm not fluent and therefore must at least partially rely on someone else's translation of the things Russian political activists and analysts have written... and let's face it, 99% of the time they're ex-pats writing their exposition pieces from outside of Russian territories to avoid being thrown in jail for them.

Still, it's not really my own opinion I'm espousing, is what I'm trying to say. And I mean, it's Russia, so of course nothing is ever simple.

But the major problem with the Russian economy (the very low price of oil) has shit-all to do with Trump/Clinton/the U.S.

And if war, even a proxy war, hasn't happened after Georgia, Ukraine, Syria, etc., I don't know what people think will lead to actual armed conflict. Putin has gotten away with a lot without military intervention by the U.S.
