Re: bad fandom opinions
(Anonymous) 2017-01-05 12:21 am (UTC)(link)Same thing with FFVIII - I can only shake my head at anyone who thinks the Rinoa/Squall romance was anything else than terribly written at best and creepy as hell at worst.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-05 02:42 am (UTC)(link)Anyway the best romances are Celes/Locke, Cloud/Aeris, or Zidane/Garnet so

(Anonymous) 2017-01-05 10:37 am (UTC)(link)Oh hell, yes, I almost forgot about that. That was about as tragic as it was creepy.
Re: bad fandom opinions
I think Iris might have potential after the timeskip, but I havn't got to that yet.
Maybe I just like high energy chicks, which makes Luna of zero interest to me.
Re: bad fandom opinions
(Anonymous) 2017-01-05 10:36 am (UTC)(link)I think Iris is a bit too clingy for my taste - reminded me of Selphie quite a bit and that girl annoyed the hell out of me.
Luna being bland is honestly the least of my concern. I just think the "relationship" between her and Noctis s super creepy considering the background information you get throughout the game.

Re: bad fandom opinions
(Anonymous) 2017-01-05 10:32 am (UTC)(link)For me, it's less that I hate Rinoa (I find her mildly obnoxious but it's still alright, most charater in VIII are a bit obnoxious) but more that the whole relationship seems so creepily forced upon Squall. Every single one of his so called friends plus Rinoa herself to a certain extent try to pressure him into that relationship even though there is no apparent interest from his side at all.
And then there comes the weird brainwash-y break between disc 3 and 4 where he goes from "Meh I don't particularly care" to "I am insanely obsessed with her" without any clear motivation. I've read the theory that Rinoa may have involuntarily influenced this 180 turn with her sorceress' powers (the whole knight/sorceress bond etc.), and I really want to believe in this because otherwise, it's just such bad writing it's almost physically painful.
Re: bad fandom opinions
I guess I come from my POV because I spent time reading slash fanfic for a while before I played the game and found Rinoa nowhere near as bad as even the mild versions I'd run across up until then.
Re: bad fandom opinions
(Anonymous) 2017-01-05 11:12 am (UTC)(link)The way Rinoa is vilified in fanfics is pretty ridiculous, absolutely.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-05 12:27 pm (UTC)(link)Re: bad fandom opinions
(Anonymous) 2017-01-05 01:24 pm (UTC)(link)And even if your assessment was accurate, that only makes her insistence to insert her in his life and pressure him into a relationship only more creepy instead of less because that would mean she intentionally manipulated Squall in his fucked up state of mind.
Re: bad fandom opinions
(Anonymous) 2017-01-06 12:08 am (UTC)(link)I'm kinda amused at you jumping directly to "she's intentionally manipulating him" when - Hanlon's Razor! - it's more likely she just noticed something was off and thought her pushing was genuine help. I mean, this here?
You mean the chick who thought enlisting mercenaries to support her little rebel group in a coup against her own father was a great idea?
Yeah, that's a sign of being naive/stupid, not being mentally unhealthy. Come one, no need to overstate things when there's already plenty of existing faults in the character (and game in general).
Re: bad fandom opinions
(Anonymous) 2017-01-06 12:39 am (UTC)(link)If that's so: The way it was written - which was Rinoa being incredibly clingy and ultimately even enlisting Squall's friends to basically help her with her quest of pressuring him into a relationship with her - can, in my opinion, not be read as anything else than intentional manipulation. (Note that I don't agree with AIRT so I don't think it's this bad.)
