No, see, when a black woman is sexist to a white woman, that's feminist.

Oh shut up

Yes, it is unfeminist.

But it is human.

It just means that we all have a long way to go, no matter how feminist we try to be and that we should stop expecting people to be perfect, Beyonce included.

+1

I think this is one of the many times when it's useful to make the point that something doesn't have to be perfect to be feminist.

Or, you know, we can get really angry over not liking Beyonce's music and turn it into a political critique. That also seems like a productive thing to do, I guess.

I've never listened to this singer, but there are a lot of celebrities whose feminism begins and ends with themselves. When sexism negatively impacts them, they speak out, but when it negatively impacts any other woman, they don't care. For obvious reasons, I most frequently see this complaint applied to wealthy white women who vote Republican, but there's no theoretical reason why a black person couldn't be this selfish. (Again, I've never listened to this singer, so I'm just spitballing here.)

You've never heard a Beyonce song?

TBH, the things a person says about the person their husband cheated with...I mean, unless you're half a saint, those will probably not be the nicest things. It's a very high standard to hold a person to. Just because she's rich and famous doesn't mean she couldn't have been genuinely hurt and upset; and people say nasty shit sometimes when in that position.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-06 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
I'm going to call bullshit on this, and ftr I'm a woman who was cheated on. I didn't get mad at the other women El Dirtbago slept around on me with. It wasn't their fault. They weren't the ones who had taken a vow before god and everyone to 'forsake all others' 'till death do us part'. He did. My anger was directed at him. Not the women.

Not saying they were innocent victims, just that it would make me into an asshole to start insulting women I'd never met for making the same mistake I did--thinking El Dirtbago was a decent guy.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-06 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
I would agree if this was something spontaneously said in an interview or something, but I'm sure she spent quite a lot of time working on those lyrics, so there would have been plenty opportunity to go over it again if she'd wanted to.

OP, I agree. Not to mention she dances around with half her ass hanging out, singing nasty lyrics about sex, and she gets called a 'good role model for girls'. Because as we all know, feminism is all about women being sex objects.

(I don't even mind if a woman wants to dance around with half her ass out. I just don't like the hypocrisy. Why is okay if Beyonce does it, but the fashion industry is pure evil?)

(Anonymous) 2017-01-06 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
ah yeah that's the good stuff

that's the heady, sex-shaming feminism

how i've missed it

(Anonymous) 2017-01-06 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
I love this unorganized mess of a troll comment. The fashion industry? lol oh u...

Shut your prude ass up. You're just pissed your ass isn't that great. Fuck your slut shaming bullshit.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-06 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
IMO within the whole album she focused way more on Jay Z than his mistress - there was a ton of anger directed at him in the album. In fact I can think of way more lyrics directed at him than his mistress. Unless you're REALLY that offended by "becky with the good hair".

(Anonymous) 2017-01-06 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
That's what I was thinking. Either this is a troll secret or the poster is only familiar with Sorry.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-06 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
I don't even like Lemonade all that much (BEYONCE and 4 are her best albums tyvm) but the anger Beyonce invokes makes me appreciate her more. Stay mad, folks.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-06 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
I just listened to a few of the Lemonade songs recently for the first time and they were pretty boring. I have no idea why the album is considered so great.

One doesn't have to be a perfect feminist to be a feminist.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-06 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
The true feminist icons are Betty Friedan, Gloria Steinem, Angela Davis, Carrie Fisher, Hillary Clinton and Marlo Thomas.

Beyoncé has always sold feminism as a brand to profit from, not the actual belief. It's not surprising at all when her and others like her (Taylor Swift) start putting down other women because it only fits their brand of feminism of benefiting themselves.

Beyoncé and feminism should never be mixed together.
