Speaking as one of those working class Americans, I'm just tired of the "liberal elites don't understand the working class" narrative simply because, guess what, people who say that, neither does Trump.

Seriously, have people completely forgotten that Trump's a millionaire, too, and one who has fancy mansions and his name on buildings at that? Who was born into money and got, what was it, a million dollar loan from his dad to start out on his business ventures? How could any working class person look at Trump's financial history/lifestyle and honestly think, "Yeah, this guy's on our side! He gets what we're going through!" I just do not get it. He was just as patronizing to them as people claim the liberal elites are, how come that's not getting as much complaint?

Besides that, calling Trump out on his BS, and questioning the people who brought into the crap he spouted, isn't just a "liberal elite" thing. I'm liberal, yes, but sure as hell not part of the elite, and I'm just as critical of him and the reasons people supported him. And there's also been a few Republicans/conservatives out there who have criticized him and begged people not to support him as well (granted, generally for different reasons than Democrats/liberals had, but still).

Being working class doesn't excuse ignorance of facts or supporting obnoxious, shitty behavior. To imply otherwise sounds pretty condescending towards working class people in its own right.

This.

Plus, Anthony Bourdain worked his way up in hot kitchens. He has been, worked with, and employed...working class people on a personal basis, not as some distant investor in restaurants like Trump invests in hotels (but has probably never made his own bed or scrubbed a toilet, let alone ones guests in his hotels have used.)

I'll take liberals who actually respect the work the working class does instead of treating them like dupes for a vote.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-10 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly.

Mind, I'm not denying there's out of touch assholes on the liberal/Democratic side. Of course there are. Every political affiliation has its obnoxious jerks. Nor do I think the Democratic Party is perfect.

But for people to keep insisting that it's liberal elitism that was the reason Trump won...just...no. It might've been a small part of the reason, and there may well be other reasons people went for Trump.

But I have relatives and co-workers who were Trump supporters, and my mom works with a lot of conservative people who voted for Trump, too. They voted for him because he "told it like it is", and because they hated Obama and Hillary, and held a lot of racist/sexist/homophobic views, and they listened to a bunch of fake news bullshit instead of facts. One lady my mom works with votes the way her husband and sons tell her to vote. And since they were Trump supporters, and insisted Fox News was the only truthful media outlet, well...

I mean, for cripes' sake, there were people who believed that dumbass Pizzagate story. Sorry, if a working class person buys into Pizzagate or genuinely believes Obama wasn't born here/is a secret Muslim or crap like that, I'm going to call that mindset stupid. I don't care if it's "elitist" to say that, it's true. Those people could be hard-working, good at their jobs, devoted to their family and friends, all that good stuff, but it doesn't negate the fact they believe something stupid and false.

Trump supporters aren't known for their intelligence and observation skills.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-10 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
It's a way of not admitting what was really going on (and/or of maintaining the "Bernie would have won" lie)

Working class people overwhelmingly went Clinton. Poor people overwhelmingly went Clinton. People whose main concern is the economy overwhelmingly went Clinton. But if we admit that there's still a racism problem in America or the impact of the Russians and Comey in our election, everyone goes nuts.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-10 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Then who voted for Trump? I've heard it's not working class, it's not non whites, it's not woman, it's not the poor, it's not millennials. But there's definitely not enough old rich white people to make the difference even if we factor in Russia.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-10 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
The white middle class and up, the evangelists, Cubans, and the enormous number of racists. It was the white middle class that was expected to vote for Clinton and didn't.

Also people whose main concern was terrorism, ironically.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-10 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. She won the popular vote for a reason.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-10 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought she won the popular vote mostly because of California

(Anonymous) 2017-01-10 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
She got very thin margins in most of the states she lost. "It was all California and New York" is another one of those myths used to keep from trying to fix things

(Anonymous) 2017-01-11 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
She didn't get my vote.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-10 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
The whole liberal elites and real Americans narrative has nothing at all to do with actual economic class even in the heads o the people who promote it. I don't think any of them really are thinking about jobs and class when they talk about it. It's entirely about culture and a formless concept of Real Americanness and we should probably stop trying to argue against it on economic lines at all.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-10 08:36 am (UTC)(link)
Precisely. Thank you.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-10 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Perfect comment.

Right there.

^^^^^

It's so patronising. Just because I'm working class doesn't mean I'm a bigot. There are also plenty of working class people who are minorities due to be in most *danger* from Trump.
