Visiting Rome

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2017-01-10 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
How hard would Rome be for a first trip overseas? I've heard it is pretty hard to navigate but wanted some first hand experience.

My sister and I are trying to figure out where out next trip should be. We've only been to Washington DC. Right now I am looking at London or Rome. I wanted to go to Japan but my sister is pretty 'meh' about it.

I went there two years ago and while it was a little bit tricky to find the way at times, it wasn't too bad. Of course, we were walking everywhere and didn't drive. Just get good map.

SA
Forgot to add that it was Rome I went to.

I've been in London too, but that wasn't a touristy thing, just an all weekend workshop trip and no wandering around.

Thanks! I'll look around for some guides and such.

Also, instead of hotels, there's also the option of only-apartments.com or bedandbreakfast.eu That's the sites my friends and I used to rent an apartment for our stay.

Also be super, super aware of your surroundings in Rome. I've never been but I've known multiple people who have gotten pickpocketed there.

I loved London and have been twice. Are you planning on doing the trip just the two of you? Are you going to do it on your own or are you thinking of doing a tour?

Maybe just the two of us. But there is a good chance my mom and my sister's boyfriend would want to go.

And we'd probably do it on our own.

I'd suggest no matter where you go, finding a walking tour for your first day. This way you'll get a good feel for the city and then have the opportunity to go back to things later. If you plan a week long trip, wherever you go, look at doing day tours outside of the city.

European hotel rooms are generally more expensive and not as big as American ones. They also don't have as many amenities for the same price.

There's also the option to rent an aparment instead. That's what my friends and I did when we went. I don't remember which site we used, though. It wasn't Air'nb.

If we end up going to London, it will be a bit easier because my mother has visited before.

It might be tricky, but it's one of the most visited places in the whole world, so they're quite used to tourists who don't know their way around. I highly recommend the Rick Steve guidebook. It's very thorough without being condescending.

Thanks for both responses (I assume the second one is also you!).

I did Rome this summer, using nothing but the Internet for research and Google Maps for navigation. It worked out really well and we didn't even get pick-pocketed (though my mother had a near-miss on the train, kinda funny in retrospect).

One tip I found to be vital during my research: you can text for taxis if you have a functioning phone, and it's really easy. Basically do what the last bit on this page tells you: http://www.rome-travel.org/rome-taxi-service-calling-a-taxi-in-rome/ The Roma metro is a bit limited and taxis can be hard to hailed on the streets, apparently because many of them are being booked like this.

That said, I visited London for the first time years before as a much younger, less-seasoned traveler who didn't have a smartphone, and it was a lot easier objectively speaking. So if you still have doubts, I would encourage you to prioritize that option.
