One time I read a fic, and I think the author was under the impression that pot was a horrible drug and it involved the character having to go through an intervention bc he smoked weed occasionally. It was the funniest thing.

Pot can be a pretty horrible drug and I'm sick and tired of people trying to portray it as this harmless fun thing all the time.

I leave as soon as the pot comes out. Having a family member who basically blazed their brains out and managed to irreparably damage not only their own life but that of my family as well based on his fucking habit doesn't make for a huge love of potheads.

That's where my nephew's at right now. Come on, kid. I know you have anxiety, and the pot helps your anxiety, but there's a fine line between "hey, I'm feeling kind of stressed out so I'll smoke a joint" and the veritable pallets he's burning up. He's a bright, ambitions guy! Just... not very often anymore.

I know it's not the pot, it's him using the pot as a coping mechanism for god knows what things he needs to go to therapy for, but I guess it's the same way some people view alcohol after watching people who had all the potential in the world just dash all their hopes and dreams away for another drink.

That's the thing. It's not even necessarily the pot itself, it's all that comes with the addiction. It's obviously not the case for everyone, but like alcoholism, it's a whole package of issues, not just the "being drunk" part.

My brother in law is at that place right now. He smokes to deal with anxiety (and other issues), rather than get therapy. He decided to make his full time job part time and go home and ... smoke pot, and play videogames. He's not dumb either, he could go into a trade perfectly fine and support himself.

Pot can be used like a crutch, and a bad one, just like alcohol.

My mother's boyfriend was in a motorcycle accident over a year ago and now has memory problems and mood swings. Thinking it would help, his mother and mine started buying him weed.

The only thing it has made him is a pothead and an asshole. Every morning he asks "Where's the weed at?" until one of us gets it for him, has my mother clean his bowl for him, and tries to get her to smoke with him, even though she constantly tells him that if she does, she might lose her job and won't be able to pay for his house.

I was curious about weed before, but after this, I'm done. If only because smoking it would remind me of him

Fair warning: You can totally blow a drug test if he's smoking around people.

It is less harmful than alcohol. So I hope you are hate how people make that seem like a harmless fun thing all the time.

who wants to bring back prohibition? there are people here who don't drink but that's not the same thing

I've definitely had conversations with anons on here who advanced the position. Of course there's no way of knowing how sincere any of that would be, but still.

I dislike the glorification of alcohol as well, but imo, it's not portrayed nearly as much as this chill-and-harmless habit in media as smoking pot is. And really, I don't think it's any less harmful in the long run.

It is less harmful

Considering there is still a debate over the influence long-time use has on the brain, I am not convinced. Driving under the influence is not harmless either.
