I'm pretty sure the backlash is happening because it's a mediocre show with some very obvious faults, yet the internet is full of people claiming that it's ~revolutionary~ (it did nothing other anime hasn't done before it), that it's ~so good~ (have you seen anime other than Naruto), that the animation is ~amazing~ (no) and well even if it was really fugly in places they deserved that award anyway because they ~tried~.

Like, I GET that people like the show, it's fine! But when they start talking about all the amazing character development, the exciting plot twists, the well-developed side cast, the great female characters, the awesome soundtrack, the exploration of gender issues, the great portrayal of "mental illness", the totally canon gay romance, I just... were we even watching the same show?

For the record: I don't hate it, I just don't think it's very good and find it utterly lacking the charm that has made me like other anime that were likewise wanting in terms of writing and production. But I really understand the people who have been turned off it because of the fandom.

...Dude Yuri has some of the most accurate anxiety I've ever fucking seen out of Japan. So, uh, hate it if you want, but the fact I could actually see myself for once and it didn't feel like some kind of joke was nice.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-27 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
You must not watch much anime because Yuuri's personality certainly isn't unprecedented.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-27 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
In all seriousness: How? What I'm seeing is a guy having nerves in situations where it is entirely natural for him to feel the pressure.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-27 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
It's the intensity. Sometimes, yeah, sure, nerves. But there's also the all-out severity of it at points if that makes sense? And how he's always doubting Victor's feelings for him and such. I mean, that I definitely relate to.

da

you can find that in any BL, though.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-27 09:28 am (UTC)(link)
It's not BL.

It may not call itself that, but it sure as hell looks like it. And the "omg why would someone like him care about someone like me, he'll find someone better for sure" is pretty staple in shoujo.

Well it isn't officially in the BL genre it's in the sports genre which is pretty significant. Sports and shounen genres tend to be incredibly homophobic especially towards gay men since the target audience is usually straight men. Usually they'll give a lot of gay fanservice without committing but in this case they actually made it canon. I also think it's significant that its the main characters in a gay relationship and not a side couple.

If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck...

(Anonymous) 2017-01-27 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Then this must be the only anime you've ever seen because I've seen so many anime that have characters with anxiety since anxiety itself is not uncommon and lots of people understand that feeling.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-27 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
as someone with anxiety all her life: no it's not lol watch "welcome to nhk" if you want an accurate portrayal of anxiety.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-27 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
lol cause everyone's anxiety presents exactly the same.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-30 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
ur the one who said u never saw anything like it before lmao

(Anonymous) 2017-01-27 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Like the other anon said, Yuuri had the most realistic representation of anxiety that I've seen in an anime, ever. As someone that struggles with anxiety, it was incredible to see.

And I've seen more than Naruto, thanks-- don't insult people just because you don't agree.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-27 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
You might have seen more than Naruto but not much if you think Yuuri is unique in any way.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-27 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
I mean not to wave my weeb card or whatever, but I've been watching anime for over sixteen years and have completed *checks my MAL* something like 250 shows, and it's one of the best written and most charming anime I've seen.

So yeah, I've seen anime other than Naruto and yeah I've seen other anime with canon gay romance and mentally ill characters, and yeah I do still think it's pretty revolutionary in some aspects (plus yeah great soundtrack, character development, the whole nine yards) and I think it's really damn good.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-27 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
Tbf, if only an anime that has done something no anime has done before is supposed to win, no anime will ever win again. Because every variation of every topic has been done before in some form or another.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-27 11:32 am (UTC)(link)
The point was that the backlash is happening because the fandom claims that the show is SO GROUNDBREAKING, when a lot of us know that that isn't the case, at all.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-27 01:40 pm (UTC)(link)
This. Just...all of this. This show was good for what it was, what I hate is everyone clamoring around it and giving it points that feel undeserved.

Also, it was really horribly paced in the end.
