I fucked up what do I do

(Anonymous) 2017-01-31 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
I failed a course in grad school and I'm freaking out, my hands are shaking, I can barely think. Is this going to be on my transcript foreveR? Am I screwed for ever getting a scholarship? is my GPA ruined?

The worst is that I failed out of stupidity, not even like failing because I failed. I didn't submit something on time and that's it.

I need to study and I can't, I can't think, I can't concentrate, any time I think of anything at all I start crying.

from the title I was expecting coffee anon v.2

Talk to your guidance counselor or someone about this. I'm sure your life isn't ruined. I've found these things can usually be fixed as long as you want to fix them.

I have an appointment to talk to him tomorrow, but in the meantime I'm freaking out. Especially bc when I mailed him he didn't say something like "don't worry we'll fix it" or whatever. then again, we're all supposed to be adults so maybe he didn't think I needed comforting or smth

Okay admittedly I haven't been to grad school, but I am assuming this is the first time you've failed something. The first time I failed something I was in undergrad, and I had a similar reaction. Here are my answers for you based off of that, if anything works differently in grad then it may be faulty:

Yes it will be on your transcript but most people won't care. If you retake the class and pass it though (like, if its a mandatory class) that will be reflected on your transcript. You can continue to get scholarships. Your GPA is probably not ruined. If you are doing fine in the rest of your classes, one failure is completely recoverable and won't effect your other academics. Talk to a guidance counselor if you're worried. You can also talk to the professor if you think they would be willing to help. Don't be afraid to ask for help.

I failed a class or two in undergrad, but that was before I was trying to have a career in academia and now I wonder if everything is ruined or not

First, anon, you gotta chill. It's okay. Yes, it happens. People fail courses in grad school. It sucks, but grad students have disturbingly high rates of mental illness stemming from the intense anxiety and sometimes people just burn. That's throwing aside the sadly common asshole professor with an ego up their ass that fail students for not licking their balls enough.

After you realize it's not just you, talk to your counselor/adviser. Get it all off your chest. They have heard it before. You are not the first one to fail and your life is not ruined.

Your other credits could well be enough to let you pass your program just fine, depending on the type of program. You may also be able to retake the course to get a better grade. You need to discuss options with your counselor first. A lot of the possibilities depend entirely on your program, school, and your country's education system.

So try to get a hold of yourself and don't battle it out alone, the counselor should help give you some perspective and advice so you don't feel so helpless. The worst thing you can do is let your anxiety take over you so you aren't able to finish your other courses, too.

It's seriously not the end of the world to have one failing grade on your transcript. Yes, people with one failing grade can still get a scholarship, and there are plenty of scholarships out there that don't look exclusively at your grades. You are going to be okay. Do your best in the courses you have now, and try to get involved with any research/extra projects your professors have, honestly, having one good relationship with a professor is worth more than grades because having a good reference is important.

(For perspective, I had a friend who failed a course and got "provisional fails" on two other courses and still passed the program; she was able to retake the course she failed for a better grade, too. And I do think she just got into a post-doc program. not saying grades don't matter at all, but, don't despair too much, OP.)

Definitely talk to your counselor about it, if you have one. If I'm not wrong colleges give you scholarships based on your overall GPA rather than individual grades? I.E. a friend of mine in college has a scholarships and she needs to keep her GPA above 80 pts. to keep it. Maybe talk to the college staff to find out how it works there.

Talk to a counselor and do it now rather than later. Be upfront about what happened and press for how it can be fixed. Look up the rules for whatever program you're in before going in to talk so you yourself have an idea of what can be done. If the counselor tells you something different to what program rules say, ask for it to be explained.

I did something similar years ago and my counselor completely screwed me over by giving me advice contrary to the program rules and assuring me things were on track when they very much weren't. I'm not saying this will happen to you, and I'd hope most counselors are actually there to work for the students, but sometimes things go on behind the scenes that can really mess up your academic career.

In my case they had overextended the program and were actively looking to cut out students, my counselor told me she had signed off for me to take the class again the next semester since we needed written permission and it turned out she had lied/never submitted the form. It came down to my word against hers, hers won, and now I'm going through a different program at a different school with little hope to ever get back into the old program of my dreams. But this is a very extreme case and any good counselor worth their salt will do what's in their power to help you get back on track. If it's not a mandated class you failed then I sincerely doubt you'll run into any trouble whatsoever.
