Media with great female characters

(Anonymous) 2017-02-02 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
What are tv shows, etc, that have female characters that are very well written and developed, and are just as important as the male characters?

Parks and Recreation springs to mind off the top of the head

Supergirl.

Brooklyn 99.

Elaine on Seinfeld was great, but she was also basically the only lady.

Parks and Rec, The West Wing IN SOME WAYS (it's super sexist in some ways but it's got at least two amazing female characters)

Buffy. Deep Space Nine. Voyager. Babylon 5 (I love how different all the women are, and Ivanova is one of the best characters ever). Star Wars (especially the EU and the more recent movies). Stargate: SG1 (Sam Carter is an amazing character). Harry Potter (I mean, Hermione was in many ways more important than Harry, everyone would be dead without her).

Battlestar Galactica. Lots of female characters, mostly written with nuance, all very different from each other, all equally important as the male characters.

And the X-Files! Dana Scully is a heroine to a generation of young women for a reason (and that reason is: she is awesome, in a real human way, not as a 2-D Strong Female Character) And there was only one episode in which she did not appear (IIRC) -- it's called "3" and it's awful. The show could survive without Mulder*; Scully was vital.

*Not very well, though.

I think the women of the BAU from "Criminal Minds" can definitely fit this list. Whether they're single or in relationships, they still have their own lives and interests, they're a good mix of tough and vulnerable, they're smart, and women like Emily and Garcia revel in their nerdiness, Garcia's got an awesome confidence about herself and her looks.

And I especially like that they actually get along, and forge strong, close friendships. You don't see them pitting against each other over their jobs or some guy, they don't have antagonistic relationships with the women the male team members are married to or dating (and I also like that they didn't make any of the women the men were with jealous and suspicious of their female co-workers in turn). Instead, they're supportive of each other and will go to bat for each other. It's such a refreshing thing to see in a TV show.

The Good Wife. Except for Kalinda.

Steven Universe, of course. King of Thorn. The women in Superior (manga) can be a little too tropey, but I think they're pretty good overall. Inside Out, Moana, Zootopia, lots of recent kids movies. Slightly Damned. Lots of sci-fi novels with female authors.

No one has yet mentioned Farscape, so...Farscape. Zhaan and Aeryn, especially Aeryn. One of my favorite characters of all time.

I agree with a lot of the shows already listed. Like The Good Wife, Brooklyn 99, BSG, X-Files, and The 100.

I would also add Elementary, as Joan is just as important as Sherlock. And I would add Legend of the Seeker. There were so many interesting female characters, from protagonists to antagonists, supporting characters and more.

Kinda surprised nobody mentioned Orphan Black yet! I actually don't love the main f/f ship but that is okay because there are many many other wonderful characters. Especially MRS S. MRS S. IS EVERYTHING.

I know that overall the show was a hot mess, but Sleepy Hollow was great for that, Abbie Mills in particular. Orphan Black so much Elementary for Joan Watson. Brooklyn 99.

I see someone else has already mentioned Criminal Minds and I agree wholeheartedly.

Soap
Scarecrow & Mrs. King
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager
The Good Wife
Grey's Anatomy
Lethal Weapon (well, Riggs and Murtaugh are the leads, but Trish is almost as important, and I would say Det. Bailey and Dr. Cahill are as important as Scorsese, Cruz, and Avery)

I don't think anyone mentioned Xena. She and Gabby were both great characters, even when men were writing the episodes.

M*A*S*H in the later seasons finally let Margaret because a person and not just a punchline.

Edith and Gloria from All in the Family

I'm starting to date myself with these answers, aren't I?

I know people on this com feel it's over-hyped, but Stranger Things. It's such a great show for having the female characters be just as active as the male characters, and even more pivotal to the plot. And as much as Eleven is my fave, I have to give a serious shout-out to Nancy and Joyce, who I think are depicted in a wonderfully realistic and nuanced way. They're not just magically bamfy when danger comes knocking. They're both very obviously terrified and grappling with feelings of helplessness and responsibility. But you clearly see them push back against the impulse to passively despair, and insist on fighting for a better outcome.

As for movies, one I haven't seen mentioned yet is 10 Cloverfield Lane. It's a pretty great movie, and the female protagonist is excellent.
