How dare queer people find something a breath of fresh air.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-04 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
They should watch more anime, then. Japan has tons of stories about canon queer, subtext queer, ambiguously queer and yuribaait/fujobait characters.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-04 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Hiya! Anime fan of 20+ years here, still never seen anything quite like YOI and it's now one of my favorites. Sorry!

(Anonymous) 2017-02-04 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
It's the first ice skating anime, isn't it? Other than that, YOI did nothing new.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-05 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt but as a seasoned gay anime veteran, Yuri on Ice may not have been completely groundbreaking, but it absolutely was unusual in that the pairing was gay and canon outside of a BL title. Believe it or not, that's not actually common, in fact, it's absolutely rare and only a small handful of titles can claim having canon gay relationships outside of BL involving leading characters.

Like, okay, you can say that Yuri on Ice didn't quite hit homerun by showing an on-screen kiss, but frankly, you also have to be pretty deluded to interpret the pair as anything but romantic. It should have gone further, I agree, but it's also nonsense to shove it in as normal anime queerbaiting.

Waves hands. Actually not the first ice skating anime. There was a shojo ine with a female lead that came out in 2004. But pretty mediocre.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-05 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
YOI fans are so easily butthurt by the slightest criticism, no wonder everyone hates you.

And no, gay couples in anime are not new with YOI. Hell I remember there being a gay couple in Cardcaptor Sakura. Also the main male character had a crush on a guy the first half of the anime whereas Sakura's best friend was in love with her. That was like 20 years ago.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-05 01:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, no, the people who are the most butthurt in this thread are the people who can't accept that not everyone shares their opinion that YoI is a terribly exploitative queer hating shitshow. I'm not even a fan of the show but the way you guys keep screeching here is pretty pathetic.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-04 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
well, there's a number of people pointing out that all the time nothing is canon, this isn't any better than all the other fujobait around.

Except talking to the fandom, they will swear up and down that they kept it to teasing on purpose, that the rings were SO an engagement even though the show said outright that it wasn't, that it doesn't matter that they didn't kiss in the end, and and and and

I hang around the anti tag to remind myself that I'm not crazy, and that there were other people who watched the show without the slash goggles glued on.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-04 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
And do not forget "their (YOI) world is homophobia-free? Do not forget Japan and Russia are really homophobic so is impossible!"

(Anonymous) 2017-02-05 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
The fact YOI is an alternate universe free of homophobia makes it lose all representation points. When there is an anime that deals with how shitty people can be because of others sexual orientation then I will call it progressive.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-05 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
A show that deals with homophobia and shits on gay people?

GASP

Wherever will we find one of THOSE?? No one would ever make one of those! Lets keep everything realistic, people! Gay folk aren't interesting unless they're suffering!

Jfc no, as an actually gay person I'm so fucking tired of hearing how much it sucks to be gay and how shitty people are to you when you're gay. Happy gays please. Happy gays with no one being assholes to them please. No homophobia anywhere, sometimes, please!

the show said outright that it wasn't

When?

(Anonymous) 2017-02-04 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Going from memory here:
Yuuri: these are good luck charms
Victor: It's almost like a marriage proposal

Then later Phichit mistakes them for engagement rings, Yuuri starts flaining in denial while Victor plays along about as seriously as when he suggested he be Yuuri's girlfriend to inspire him some episodes ago. Later still, one of the commentators talk about the "good luck rings", not engagement rings.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-04 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
No, Phichit thought they got married. Yuri denied that. Victor said they got engaged. And wouldn't you want to consider your engagement ring as good luck?

That's... all objectively wrong tho? They're certainly entitled to say that, but just because they do doesn't mean it's true.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-04 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Gotta add: why are yall so mad that its canon? Do you think that would obligate you to like it, or something?

(Anonymous) 2017-02-05 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Its not canon

(Anonymous) 2017-02-04 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Victor literally said, "This is an engagement ring."

(Anonymous) 2017-02-05 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Ummm sweatie,,,,,, he was joking,,,,, Couldn't you tell by the fact that he didn't say "I'm NOT joking, Yuuri and I are GAY and entirely seriously not-jokingly engaged to be gay married"?! hth uww!

(Anonymous) 2017-02-05 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt but to give your comment a seriousness it doesn't really deserve, I agree that Victor and Yuri probably didn't explicitly talk about the being engagement rings, and Victor may have been teasing - we don't know - but to try to pan this relationship as anything other than romantic is absolutely deluded. They did kiss, after all. Their relationship was on-screen romantic whether or not they planned to get married.

How dare other queer people not think the show is revolutionary or want more.

I don't even agree with the "its baiting" arguments, I just think Victor and Yuuri's relationship is really boring, and I want more substance.
