I mean you're right, WK was a mess and Gluhen was a lot more coherent in many ways, but... it was WK that made me love them. It was so bullshit, so melodrama, so wtf, and yet I remember it fondly, whereas Gluhen just didn't make so much of an impression on me. Like, I think if I had just watched Gluhen, the series wouldn't have stayed with me the way WK did.

And if you want good animation, I think the best compromise is the Verbrechen and Strafe OVA. Better animation, original character designs, violence uncensored.

Honestly, in my case? WK being a huge mess was a big part of why I loved it so much. It was completely ridiculous and that made it charming for me. Completely hilarious, but also charming.

Totally true, the original series is kinda essential, and delivered all the crazy that made me fall in love with WK. But I find it to be... a really hard rewatch, while I got through Gluhen mostly fine.
