I kinda liked this show more than the first series. I mean, yeah, I like the original designs more than the redesigns (except for Omi who looks A+), and I'm fond of the old series, but the animation is much better, and I liked the serialized plot. The only downside to me is that it has less Schwarz, because I was always more a Schwarz than a Weiss girl, but still, I was way more into following this than I ever was in the old series, which I mostly watched for the fanservice. (Sweet, sweet fanservice.)
Also, these two were always my main ship, so Glühen worked out exceptionally well for me :D
Bonus Secret:I never understood why everyone was so into Aya. He is by far the most boring character to me. Also lol this anime is olddd

I re-watched Glühen last year, and I think I found it almost in its entirety on Youtube? I would totally buy this on DVD tbh, but it's not super easy to get.

It was better than the first series. By which I mean, the first series was a mess while Glühen was actually pretty okay?

I mean, talking as someone who only saw them like three years ago and never saw the fandom in its heyday.

Nothing will be better than the original series dub outtakes. Fuck man, even rewatching them years later has me in stitches.

Absolutely agreed. Probably the best way to watch Weiß Kreuz. Idk what they were smoking in the studio but it was 100% worth it.

Weiß Kreuz Secret!

Let's be honest, the original series was... a huge, huge mess (but oh those nostalgic fond memories). So basically anything that improved it, even if only a little, was great. Especially the animation.

Shipping-wise, the spin-offs/sequels worked pretty well for me as well (Aya/Ken shipper here).

yoooo remember when we talked about how great a remake for WK would be?

Absolutely! AH, the potential!

(Anonymous) 2017-02-06 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
That would be so cool! The original voice actors are so great though. Are those guys even still working?

(Anonymous) 2017-02-06 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure TomoSeki and Koyasu-san are, they've always been super popular. Unfortunately ANN.com lists their work alphabetically and not by year and I'm not up with super current titles.

I mean you're right, WK was a mess and Gluhen was a lot more coherent in many ways, but... it was WK that made me love them. It was so bullshit, so melodrama, so wtf, and yet I remember it fondly, whereas Gluhen just didn't make so much of an impression on me. Like, I think if I had just watched Gluhen, the series wouldn't have stayed with me the way WK did.

And if you want good animation, I think the best compromise is the Verbrechen and Strafe OVA. Better animation, original character designs, violence uncensored.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-05 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, in my case? WK being a huge mess was a big part of why I loved it so much. It was completely ridiculous and that made it charming for me. Completely hilarious, but also charming.

Totally true, the original series is kinda essential, and delivered all the crazy that made me fall in love with WK. But I find it to be... a really hard rewatch, while I got through Gluhen mostly fine.

Oh, is early 2000s anime week starting? Yesssssssss.

I didn't really enjoy watching this series, but I liked what it did with Omi and Nagi too, lol.

I was a Schwarz fan, and tbh I like Gluhen more because I felt like they had more of a chance to shine. Even if it was pretty brief, there's more of a sense that they're really badass. And the events of Gluhen kind of open the way to potential Weiss/Schwarz team-ups in the future, and I am all about that. (I just want to see Nagi, Farfarello, and Ken bonding over shared catholic nun trauma, or comparisons of Crawford and Aya as the stoic Team Dads.)

My teen years... This was one of my first fandoms.

Maaaan, Omi was originally my favorite character, and in my opinion had the absolute worse redesign. It was obvious they wanted to make him look more mature for his new position as Persia, but it just didn't work for me. It never felt like 'Omi.' The new hair color was an especially awful choice.

Gluhen definitely felt more coherent but it was really hard to figure out what was going on exactly thanks to all the drama CDs in between that you're supposed to listen to before watching. For that reason alone, I will always prefer the first season. But the original is also just more fun in general for me.

I wonder nowadays what the juggernaut ships would be if the dynamics were exactly the same as the first season. Let's be honest, none of the original popular ships actually made very much sense.

But with that lawsuit and new character designs being unpopular overall, I doubt a remake will ever happen.

That's a really interesting question re:which pairings would be popular today.

Considering the current fandom trends, I guess there would be a huge amount of pedo wank for any pairing featuring Omi or Nagi.

Weiß/Schwarz pairings would probably have "abusive relationship" drama but I think Schuldig/Aya could be even more popular than it was back in the day.
Not sure if the juggernauts would be less popular now though because I can see Yohji/Aya still being a favourite and Ken/Omi as the pair-the-spares runner-up. It's true that it never really was about what made sense, but that hasn't exactly changed.

I think a remake could be done with a redesign that's not as massively different from the originals as the Glühen designs were. I mean what the hell was up with that insanely long braid?
Imo, Weiß Side B had fairly acceptable designs for Aya and Ken (I don't remember if Yohji and Omi appeared in a flashback).
