I've gotten yelled at for saying this on FS before, but some people just can't be quite as apolitical as others. It's a privilege to be able to consider "politics" separate from media, entertainment, etc.

It's pretty easy to not pay it the time of day though. It's easy enough to find stuff thats cater to what I want. Trouble is when people expect it from the big corps but still desperately cling to it

I've sort of gone back and forth on this. I'm very much of the "the personal is political" mindset. I think the divide between "politics" and "not politics" is often artificial. But at the same time, there are times when I just need a break from all things Trump and if people are shorthanding that as "politics" I'll deal with it.

I agree wholeheartedly with this, and don't argue against escapism in the least. I'm just consistently surprised that people seem to think one can consume media in a way that is entirely apolitical. I can only speak for myself, but since I have a body that isn't allowed to be apolitical (to get a little postmodern continental feminist philosophy about it all), my consumption of media could never be apolitical either. I also find it weird that people seem to think any media can be apolitical? Which I suppose is an offshoot of the privilege I'm talking about.

I'm kind of uncomfortable with people calling it a privilege because I don't know that I agree, some people are apolitical simply as a survival mechanism but they are not at all privileged in the slightest.

I actually think it can even be a privilege to be political, if you have the time to protest, the money to donate, etc etc, that may not be things some people have.

I don't mean "political" is in "able to participate in resistance," I mean "political" as in being a person whose very existence is political--a woman, broadly speaking, but more pressingly POC, disabled folks, LGBT folks, immigrants/families of immigrants, and in the US right now, Muslims, etc.

I definitely agree that there is often a huge overlap between politics and media, to say nothing of media that is specifically centred around politics. But I disagree with the inference that fans wanting to keep politics out of fandom makes them apolitical or privileged. Look at the thread on the first page: people are worn out and want some escapism. That doesn't make them apolitical and has no bearing on what privilege they do or do not have.

I have no problem with escapism! I just think a lot of the "keep politics out of my fandom!" comes from people who have that privilege. Not exclusively by any means. I guess I just don't believe anything is really apolitical.
