54. As an American, I say a resounding

US TV sucks ass compared to UK TV. Who do you think you are telling me I can't watch the shows I love just because I carry a blue passport? I KNOW not all British people are like the characters on the show. Really. I'm smart enough to know that Britain, like the US, is full of all different kinds of people. Anyway, I'm gonna keep watching the shows I love and do it PROUDLY just to piss off American-hating assholes like you.
PS: I blast Billie Piper songs and sing along while I drive...on the "right" side of the road. (And if you consider them classics, I laugh at you. 1999-2000 wasn't THAT LONG AGO.) Fuck you.
PPS: You fail at secret making.

I dare the OP to watch one episode of any of the following:

The Hills
Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?
American Gladiators
any vapid, terrible "reality show"

And not wonder why Americans like British television so much better. Even our news broadcasts are awful.

Re: 54

They actually have Are You Smarter over there. It's just called Are You Smarter Than A 10-Year-Old, I think. AND they have American Gladiators, but it's just called Gladiators (I know you're jumping for joy about that)! So maybe I should tell this person to stop watching anything American or based on American shows, huh? Then again, that'd be a huge chunk of missing programming.

Stick to House. Only American show worth watching.

Also Avatar. I hear Dexter's pretty good, too, but it's not my cuppa.

Dexter is fucking fantastic.

Ungh.

Aw no, American TV is great too!
You guys have Lost, Pushing Daisies, Ugly Betty, Gossip Girl, Desperate Housewives, House MD, Arrested Development and loads of other great shows!

Re: 54

[identity profile] bergeronprocess.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
And for a while, we didn't have any of those! Oh, writer's strike :( But shows like those seem to be the exception to the rule, we have a terrible amount of crappy reality shows and such as well. And I do hate how American Idol seems to be important enough to talk about on the actual news when important things are happening across the country/world. :-\

Re: 54

[identity profile] winks.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
:| The writers' strike was a really shit time, omg.
I love how American seasons are so much longer than British ones. You guys get over 20 episodes of each show, right? Who, Torchwood and Skins only ever have about 13 maximum. Woe :(

Re: 54

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, as an American, I don't quite understand that. We do 13 episode seasons if the studios aren't certain the shows going to fly and they want to test the waters, otherwise we expect our shows to put out 23 episodes. Wait too long between seasons and people get sucked into something else and forget about the show they were watching. Of course, we could just have short attention spans.

But seriously, I wonder if there's some logistical reason for British seasons being so short. Are all the shows sharing studio space, and have to clear out so the next show can film? Or do the actors have other gigs they gotta do, and can only afford to spend a couple of months on a TV show?

Re: 54

[identity profile] winks.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
The only reason I can imagine would be that British tv companies only want series of shows to last for one season, and I mean season in the 'Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter' sense - in summer there's hardly any serial shows on due to the holidays and stuff, and channels organise the shows they put on during the year in a 'Spring lineup', 'Autumn lineup' etc etc. That said, British channels do broadcast the longer American series so maybe I'm just talking out of my hat!

Re: 54

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Well that kind of makes sense. Summer is our down season as well -- though sometimes studios test out new or quirkier than normal shows during that time to see if they'll fly, usually it's just wall to wall reruns. Though lately, our seasons have gotten kind of crazy, with mid-season breaks lasting longer than the space between finale and start, which kind of blows the whole idea of even having a finale.

Re: 54

[identity profile] runonmoonlight.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
From what I know, they tend to spend longer on each episode during production. I remember reading that they spent about two weeks on each episode for Torchwood, and for America they tend to get through an entire episode in a week.

I don't know what the production time tends to be on Canadian shows though, but I think it might be a mix, because some of our shows follow the American standard, and some follow the British. We're a little confused up here.

Re: 54

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Well, not exactly in a week -- The writer finishes the script out several weeks ahead of time, the set team goes to work, then principal photography, and last special effects. But at any given moment they have several episodes in production at once. Which is still slow compared to the soaps that grind the episodes out at an incredible rate.

Re: 54

[identity profile] runonmoonlight.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry, I mis worded a little there. I mean the time they take to actually film the episode, I wasn't counting pre or post production at all. American shows tend to do the filming aspect a bit quicker it seems then a lot of the British and some of the Canadian productions.

Re: 54

[identity profile] bergeronprocess.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
The seasons are a bit truncated this year due to the strike, but yeah, you can see around 20 episodes sometimes. But I actually kind of like the shorter UK seasons. Might be because 13 is my lucky number.

Hey now, House is pretty decent. And we have Stargate: Atlantis, dammit! And um...like, a hundred CSI/Law&Order/some variation thereof?

Re: 54

(Anonymous) 2008-05-08 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Enh. I've watched both over the years. The Brits generally import our crappiest TV and we generally import their best. It's an apples-to-oranges comparison.

Of course, I'm unimpressed by New Who and Billie Piper both, and I refuse to kiss ass to UK TV just because it's not American. Like what you like, but it has nothing to do with what country it came from.

Re: 54

[identity profile] maids.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)
US TV sucks ass compared to UK TV.

are you serious?

i like in the UK and let me tell you US shows seem to be better produced and better scripted than our drama offerings. doctor who and torchwood are the exceptions as its one of our biggest money making tv shows and we throw extra money at them as we want it to look good for pontenial international buyers. watch our soaps and see the bad production values and poor scripting. plus our reality shows are so laughable that we don't even like them.

for example, flight of the conchords and the mighty boosh. conchords gets the benefit of more money, and more money makes better production. most of the boosh is shot in a fucking STUDIO and the props are hand made using ordinary items (and boy does it show)

i can list ten good american tv shows on at the moment and only two good british ones.

i'm not trying to start anything, i know there is shit both sides of the pond (the hills FUCK) but its all apples and oranges, as another commenter said.
