DCEU

(Anonymous) 2017-02-16 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Ben Affleck is no longer directing the Batman movie. He has said multiple times that he would direct as long as the script is good. So I guess it isn't good. How can you mess up a Batman movie???

Live Action Mulan

(Anonymous) 2017-02-16 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I admit I rolled my eyes at the live action Beauty and the Beast remake, thinking what's the point if it's all shot for shot basically the same but with horrible cgi? But the first I heard of a Mulan live action remake I was 110% fully on board with a hell yes!

I was at first too. But some of the things I've heard have given me a lot of pause.

It sounds neat, but I'm not really sure I'm confident in Hollywood's ability to handle casting well on something like this.

That + Aladdin.

Like Disney says they'll do right by them, but I hope public pressure doesn't let up until the thing is filmed and released.

Honestly, I don't think Disney would whitewash lead characters like that. I genuinely think they would be very sensitive in casting people of the correct ethnicity.

I'm not saying I have faith in Disney's ethics as a company, or anything. I just am not anticipating this being a problem in this case.

Well Disney usually has the voice actor of the character be the same ethnicity as them, so I doubt we'll have another Last Airbender fiasco.

Mulan is my favorite Disney movie and I hope they don't screw up the live action version! But hey, at the very least, I'll have new merch to buy.

Star Wars

(Anonymous) 2017-02-16 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
What do you think Star Wars is? Or should be? I was reading this one funny TCW recapper who keeps noting how gloriously ridiculous Star Wars is, and that's why she loved it. She wants all the cheesy dialogue and improbable coincidences and recycled dialogue and soap opera goodness. But, it seems that with Rogue One, everyone's really loving gritty-realism(TM) in their SW. There's a lot of shitting on Rebels when they do their goofier episodes. And, of course, the prequels-hate.

IDK, what do you guys think?

(On another note, I just finished Ahsoka and Wild Space if anyone wants to talk about those)

I think it is all of the above? I mean, I think Rogue One, even with the grittiness, still felt Star Wars. It wasn't as gritty and dark as, say, the New Jedi Order. It still had some ridiculousness and lightness to it.

It's a big universe, it can be whatever a single creator wants. Bloodline is in one corner and Freebooter Chronicles is in another.

Re: Star Wars

I liked Rogue One as it's own story. It had a very specific story to tell and the style they chose fit it well. it was a great build up to Episode IV.

That being said, it didn't truly feel like a "Star Wars" movie to me, whereas The Force Awakens felt one hundred percent like a Star Wars movie. It was fun, it was adventure, it had universe tropes, it was over the top in a few places. I loved it.

So while I couldn't tell you specifically what I'm looking for, I do think there is a very specific feel and formula to make it a Star Wars movie.

btw, I love the ewoks and hated the prequels. Make of that what you will!

Re: Star Wars

I mean look at the prequels - the first two movies were about trade negotiations at their core and were boring as shit. but you see the politics of clone wars and it's handled much better, and it helps that it was scattered between lighter episodes.

Re: Star Wars

(Anonymous) 2017-02-16 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
I'm really not sure. My introduction was the original trilogy as a kid, and I really really loved the Archetypal Space Fantasy feel of those (mystics and princesses and rogues and evil emperors, but in SPACE), but while I hated a lot of the dialogue and a few world-building choices in the prequels, I also really liked the exploration of politics and a bigger-feeling, more complicated galaxy. The bits of the EU I've read/seen, I've liked that aspect too. It's one of the things I really missed in TFA. It got a lot of the OT feeling back, but it also felt like it massively shrunk the galaxy and the worldbuilding back down, so that the entire universe now consists of the First Order and the Rebellion MkII having a(n exceptionally lethal) playground fight. Even the OT felt so much bigger than TFA, possibly because the sheer size of the Empire made up for its monopoly on galactic politics. It was so big it didn't need to be overly complicated. The First Order just doesn't have any of that oomph.

So, I don't know. I really like the camp and the ridiculousness of the OT, but I loved a lot of the worldbuilding and politics of the prequels and the EU, and I think Star Wars could use a little bit of both.

(I haven't seen Rogue One yet, so I can't comment on that one specifically).
