AYRT. Not in my (British canon) fandom they aren't.

nayrt but I disagree. Go into Harry Potter, American writers are very tryhard in trying to make things sound like British. Almost obnoxiously so, but hey, the intention is usually there.

Now, watch your average British fanfic writer do Supernatural or Teen Wolf or something. Not even close.

Mum. I see mum for mom so much in Teen Wolf fandom.

Britishisms are ubiquitous in Teen Wolf and Supernatural fic. There's no avoiding it, unfortunately.

Yep. Dean using British slang is something he'd never do, so it always brings me right out of a fic. Another inaccuracy Supernatural fic writers are bad about is when they write any of the characters as Catholic priests. The cringe is very real in that situation. How can people not know that priests don't get married?!

If you're mostly from a Protestant cultural background and not very familiar with Catholicism, that seems like a fairly easy mistake to make, actually.

nayrt but I don't know, assuming you're from a Christian-dominant culture, that seems like religion 101. Like, I think it's possible for someone to know that Catholic priests can't marry, but in the same way it's possible for an American to not know who the president of the United States is or a British person to not know if Ireland is part of the UK or not. Like, it takes a very secluded reality.

I'm British and not a Roman Catholic, but I would be extremely surprised by a British person who didn't know RC priests don't marry (in fact, I've encountered non-religious British people who assume Church of England clergy can't, because the Christianity=Catholicism trope is apparently quite powerful even in cultures where Roman Catholics aren't the dominant Christian denomination.)
