In general, way too much erotica has a binary divide between the top who penetrates and the bottom who is penetrated.

Yep. Hate that.

oh, yes. So much this. There are certain characters who I interpret as more domming or subbing, but that doesn't have to equal top or bottom. Erotica needs more doms bottoming and subs topping. And there are many (most) characters who I can read any way because I don't interpret them a specific way, and reading lots of different things is way more fun.

Yeah, thanks. I'm pretty sure that encountering some of that stuff when I was younger did my perception of sex no favors :/

+1000

I just wanted to thank you because due to this thread, I have a fic in my drawer to dust off and start working on again. I lost confidence since all I saw was "can't be a Dom and be anything but on top, always" fic. Now that I know there might be an audience, it gives me incentive to actually continue and maybe finish/post the whole thing.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-22 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Please don't do that thing with the trademark symbols. I hate that.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-22 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
I hate the "all men want to penetrate" thing.

No. No they don't. It is okay to not want to.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-22 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
I think a lot of us feel that way.

Even when I end up enjoying a certain dynamic, sometimes it makes me cringe when the ham-handed "that's how it's supposed to be!!!!" dynamic comes through. :/

I've read some amazing authors (IMO) who don't handle it very well and it seems like sex is a one-note thing. The characters can be great, but they still revert to this one stupid stereotype during sex. (Penetrating=real sex, teh manly man is teh one who tops, etc.)

I find it annoying whenever I see headcanon posts on tumblr that insist *insert male character who's shown to be submissive and un-masculine in canon* is actually a complete macho badass. Not only does it reinforce this notion that vulnerability = bad and insulting, it's almost always done for the sake of justifying the submissive character dicking/topping their favorite character.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-22 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. There's no need to change the character's personality to make him suddenly macho and dominant. Surprise, you can be submissive and unmasculine and still top! You can be submissive and unmasculine and still top because your dominant partner told you to because they feel like bottoming today! (But when's the last time you saw that in a fic? Ha)

(Anonymous) 2017-02-22 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
+1, he can be submissive and unmasculine and a top! Or a switch, or a bottom, or not into penetration at all because your personality and your sexual preferences don't come bundled!

(Anonymous) 2017-02-22 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, you nailed this on the head, OP.

I absolutely hate that as well but to be fair - would stay far from any other similar things such as 'power bottom' in description or whatever. Am sure some people like any combination and each to their own but been trying to find gay lit with physical disability (hate so say that as no one should put everything in one category but all I seen is blind and deaf people - again, grand! Just wanted to see other samples because wanted to see if anyone written something similar to myself). Unfortunately, books very much love mentioning those tropes in summaries.

Then again, I absolutely cannot read power play while not minding outside of fiction and it is not about writing method just not my thing to read xD. Fanfic authors probably took it from all 90s and early 00s erotic lit portals and / or dating sites - again, each to their own and here is me glad that I never reached online dating phase (was close, so very close - was working on Polish queer dating portal with other folks but it fell through xD).

I'm not into anything that takes position or dom/sub thing too seriously.

Did I write this in my sleep?

(Anonymous) 2017-02-22 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree, and I'm also annoyed by the assumption that there's always gotta be penetration. Some guys aren't into it, and that doesn't say anything about their masculinity or Real Man status, either.
