If I wasn't so darn lazy, I would probably have watched this already because I love me some figure skating and I've heard nothing but good things about the skating scenes.

There was poor animation and boring music here and there, especially with the less important characters' routines. Anyway, I'm a skating girl myself but how much can you really get invested in watching animated characters -- underdeveloped ones at that -- skating? A guy does four quads in his program? Sure he can, he's fucking animated!

As if real skaters aren't doing more than four quads in programs now, hmm? And there's multiple skaters doing four quads.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-28 11:41 am (UTC)(link)
That was hardly the point, but replace 'four' with 'ten' or even 'a hundred' if you must. The point is that animated athleticism is only so impressive without a meaty story behind it.

This show wasn't called QUALITY on Ice for no reason. The Skating scenes were terrible with off model characters. Whoever told you they were good were probably rabid fans.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-26 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, it wasn't all good... but this isn't quite fair. The animation was very good (for TV) when it needed to be. The main characters' routines were always a pleasure to watch, a few recycled shots aside. The problem is the sheer glut of skating scenes, leading to uneven quality.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-27 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
The animation was good during the first episode and immediately after that, it started slipping. The skating scenes were rotoscoped off CGI models and still had a worse framerate than a three dollar Deen production. Characters were off model in every scene and it's funny to watch how hard they tried to draw well the important scenes, and yet came nowhere close to the quality of the first episode. Best part was watching tumblr gif makers struggle to find scenes that would look even mildly ok as gifs.

The show actually more or less received positive reviews for its animation, despite some awkward shots. To say it is "terrible" seems pretty skewed.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-26 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
By the same people who think this was best show of the year, best main character of the year, best OST, best animation, best direction, etc?

(Anonymous) 2017-02-26 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, if you don't agree, you don't agree. But when critics give it positive reviews in basically all those categories, you don't really get to say it's "only rabid fangirls" who would claim those things. If anything, by trying to argue it's so terrible, you seem a bit like an anti-fan.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-26 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
Anime critics are just average joes, their opinions aren't more worthwhile than any other fan.

No matter how you look a it, the animation was serviceable during the non skating scenes, and terrible for most routines. First episode had great animation, eveything moved all the time, the rest of the show? Not so much. I think some of you are confusing looking good with having good animation. Go watch any Kyoani show, that's good animation.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-26 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
Positive reviews... from it's rabid fans. Especially if you're talking about crunchyroll awards lmao

This must be some peoples only anime if they think that animation was good. There is a reason people mock it.

Tadashi Hiramatsu just won animator of the year from the Tokyo Animation Awards for the series, which is a critics award. Certainly not 'rabid fans' nor just random people reviewing anime on a website.

I'm really boggled why there are so many comments bashing the animation lol. I thought the routines were really gorgeous and I understand that overall, Yuri on Ice got really good reviews for its animation. Obviously there is some reused footage, and some shots look very wonky if you look at the individual frames, but overall it is very pretty - and ice skating certainly isn't easy to animate, so all things considered, I found it pretty impressive.

Yeah I agree, considering their likely budget and how many action scenes they had to animate I think they did a pretty bang up job. Sure some of the individual frames are godawful, and the tweening sucks here and there, but any decent anime studio is going to reserve more of their budget for the ending to avoid a NGE snafu. Sure you can show me some gifs of poorly animated scenes, but I can also pull out the last few seconds of Yurios final skate routine in the series.

DA

Idk, I watched the entire thing really wanting to like it but I wasn't blown away by a lot of the ice skating. I kept seeing peoples' proportions going weird as they skated, like their arms getting longer or shorter. And, honestly, since ice skating IS hard to animate that'd just be more reason to cut down on the number of routines and put in more character development scenes imo

(Anonymous) 2017-02-26 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. It was very pretty.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-26 08:51 am (UTC)(link)
It's all fanboys pissed their shitty animation Mob Psycho crap got shafted by a literal history making anime. Real figure skaters love it and can't praise it enough. Gonna side with the people who know what they're talking about.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-26 12:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Figure skaters are animation experts now? Lol.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-27 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Figure skaters recognize properly animated skating, and the fact that even the programs that didn't get the budget to be well animated are realistic and good by skating standards means more than angry haters and their complains.

Watch it. It's a great, fun show. Ignore the few salty anons that show up every time there's a YOI related secret on this community.
