(Anonymous) 2017-03-03 03:37 am (UTC)(link)Problem is ... it is a reality, I do not mean the 'single mum' thing as mine worked as a waitress or cleaner for nights when we lived in USA (same as during the day xD, she had two shifts). However, when I hit 18 - all full time night jobs were for physical workers - so waiting stuff, shop clerks (never found one without restocking) and occasional few with guards. Cleaning staff had few hours top and even most I mentioned were half-time.
Essentially, if you had something else during the day and wished not to die - grey and black market was you. Add someone who could not do physical jobs and you had me admining an escort agency for almost a decade until my health stopped my working dreams. Had full time day uni and still, an admin job is way easier but after a year of that - dropped out as no sleep is not grand for study. Then ... never found another job - recession, not being employed officially and disabled just does not help.
It is a cliche, same as seedy diner waiting staff and bartenders. While it is same reality for blokes (worked with single dads, a dude here myself but yes, majority was single mums) - there is not a market equally as big due to patriarchy and all things we love.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-03 03:48 am (UTC)(link)1) Factory staff - mum also worked that and it was mixed 12 hour shifts. One was from 3 am to 3pm, other one was 10 am to 10 pm (it was just her shifts, there was more of them as it was a major meat processing plant).
2) Driver! Bus or taxi is very common here (could drive at 18 but did not have a car nor money to hire one from a taxi depot).
3) Extra shift at a fast food city centre place. Those open after 9pm for club goers returning home.
4) Receptionists at hotels (nope, cleaners are always days, same as kitchen staff unless it is a weird hotel). Guards or caretakers but it is a hard position to land.
5) Werehouse stocker - usually a part time one or one for a project so not really that in demand with single parents.
6) City cleaner, garbage disposal person (they tend to start at night), mail sorting person in a sorting office.
7) Casino staff.
8) Some call centre open at night or outsourced for clients in different time zone.
9) Internet worker that does 1000 surveys a day, writes clickbait articles, small-time seo and so on. Network admins are not really hired nowadays unfortunately.
10) Other sex work things that are not dancing, escorting, street walking and so on. There is camera people doing live chats, those that are call operators and yes, even text chat ones thought does not get you much.

But take the stripping out of it and I agree, the media doesn't really seem to show single parents as happy people, it's always "I'm so burdened, why is my life so bad?" which again, seems kinda garbage.
ETA: Although thinking about it, happiness doesn't make for great telly, so maybe I'm over thinking it and ignoring the fantasy / reality boundary.
