And I guess that I get to have no respect for the part of the fandom that hates all characters with vaginas because they might -- gasp! -- touch one of the boys.

"No, no! Say it isn't so! Only Sam and Dean (and me, me! The crazy misogynist fan, the only one whose vagina is PURE enough and DESERVING enough to be in the same room as the brothers) can touch each other or even think about touching each other. Dean's one night stands are okay because they're just ew! dirty hoars!! who don't even have names, and Ruby's an icky demon who they surely would never think about having the nasty sex with because she's a demon so I guess that she's okay, too, and Madison's an evil dead doggie and Jess was a saint because she died in the pilot, but Bela -- her character sucked because she was smart and pretty and alive and FEMALE and Sammy had a hard on for her and OMG she like out smarted them sometimes and WOMEN CAN'T BE SMARTER THAN THE WINCHESTERS and anyone who thought otherwise is and OMG stupid!hoar who shouldn't even get to watch the show!

Dude, she's fucking dead because people whined about her like your sorry self, so MOVE ON and let those of us who liked her do the same.

In short: STFU, and get OUT of my fandom.

On one hand, the amount of misogyny in the Supernatural fandom depresses me utterly. On the other hand, the fact that its misogyny is interrogated and talked about more than any other fandom I've lurked in makes me a little proud of it, sometimes.

Let me end my ranty-ness, and discuss this like a reasonable human being.

This is the first fandom that I've really been in where I've noticed it going on. To be fair, my other main fandom before this one was Lord of the Rings RPS, and it was very, very easy given the number of male characters to just ignore anyone else completely. I wrote a fic one time with ten different slash couples and I don't think there was a female character in it -- just because there were that damn many slashy options (especially when crossed over with the cast of Troy).

Supernatural fandom keeps weirding me out -- and this is coming from a wincest writer, for goodness sake. I was terribly surprised to see the misogyny out and about in the fandom. And true, a lot of people, I think, just didn't like what they did with Bela, but so many more didn't like her because she was female.

I am glad that it's something that's being discussed in the fandom, but I honestly just don't understand it. The majority of the fandom, to the best of my knowledge, is female themselves. I don't understand how it then follows that the female characters on the show are villified and hated to such a degree. And yeah, it can get into a circle of wank, but I just can't understand the knee-jerk hatred of all female characters except Ellen. And I heart Ellen like whoa, but it seems like she's only accepted because she's a type of gun toting badass mother figure.

I just don't get my fandom, a lot of the time.

God, I could write a paper on my experiences of misogyny in fandom. Last year there was a lecture series on my U about, basically, internet fandoms (with focus on Japan), and one of the professors made a point that fandom provided a uniquely feminist space of women writing for women. I had to put up my hand and object to that, because I've seen way too much BS for it to sit right with me. And the fact that this is women writing for women makes it even sadder.

I started off in the Gundam Wing fandom, and the hatred many of its contributors had for the main female character, Relena, is legendary. To be fair, she was to many an annoying character. But she was vilified and demonized in many fics to the extent that it was completely OOC; Relena-bashing was a genre to itself. The amount of energy spent hating her was almost equal to the amount spent in adoration of one's favorite characters.

Perhaps this is a symptom of needing a character to die for your ship, basically. It's easier to write a non-canon ship if the other character is turned into a monster. We see that happening with characters like Ron in the Harry Potter fandom, so maybe it's not all based in misogyny. But 99% of the time, it happens to women.

There is also the commonly heard accusation of Mary Sue for canon female characters, if they dare display half of the competence of some other male characters like Superman or Jack Sparrow, even when these characters rarely are accused of the same thing. This happened in the Nightlife fandom, where a sweet, teenage psychic was accused of being a Mary Sue. This is the same story which includes a self-made ninja genius and a several-thousand-year old bisexual Puck.

Meanwhile, if a female characters have obvious flaws, like Bela or Jo, they are called bitches or sluts or whores. They just cannot win. After the last episode, I checked out the TWoP forums. Bela was called a bitch 5 times in 20 minutes, and the forum included such comments of, "Well, she was fourteen and obviously not a virgin since Daddy Dearest was fucking her."

I really don't know WHY this happens in so many fandoms. It just completely grosses me out.

No, she sucked because she was terribly written and all talk but no action.

For christ's sake, she stole from miserable old ladies, how is that bad ass?

And always getting someone to do the dirty work, ala BDABR, RSAM, Fresh Blood, and TIOMS.

Her storyline was crappy, and the boys got irrationally sloppy around her, I mean I can understand the lotto tickets, that was hilarious, but how she pulled off all the other shit and the Winchesters were still being slow about it? Nope, sorry, not buying it.

And her little 'daddy touched me bad' story? Uch, they even fucked with the Crossroads demon shit, so of course it wouldn't be poor wittle Bela's fault, she didn't know better, she was too young, so everybody feel sorry for her.

*rolls eyes*

TY.

Not everyone's loathing of Bela has anything to do with not wanting females on the show. It was just a poorly executed character, to put it lightly.

Re: 14 Overly Sensitive Commenter is Overly Sensitive

[identity profile] blankversesfic.livejournal.com 2008-05-13 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Not everyone's loathing of Bela is because she's female, you are correct. And I am a bit defensive about it, I will freely admit that part.

But enough people have gone off on her, even before the season started and we knew anything about her up to and including what she looked like, that every time there's criticism of her character it sounds like more in the tune of "get rid of the female characters on the show because we think girls are dumb". And Bela's character was flawed in a myriad of ways, true. A lot of the secondary characters' story arcs are flawed in some ways, as so much focus goes into Sam and Dean (and I do like their characters as fleshed out as possible).

But that doesn't negate the fact that this fandom is heavy with misogyny in a lot of ways. I don't understand it, and while I know I'll probably get all uppity about it I would be interested in someone trying to explain it to me. Because I will often hear "Bela sucked due to having a vagina" in place of "I didn't care for her character" because the former so heavily outweighs the latter in this fandom.

(I did mean me as the overly sensitive commenter, by the by, I hope that came across the way I intended it to.)

Just for clarification, I'm the "TY" anonymous commenter.

From what I've heard, Kripke axed her because he was having trouble relating her to the show, which is the reason I didn't like her to begin with. Once Ruby was revealed as a demon, I FULLY accepted her part in the show, and the fact that she was a recurring character, because she could actually have relevance to Dean's deal, and the demon war, possibly Mary's backstory... the options for her character are limitless. I think a lot of us were just sort of waiting it out as far as seeing what we were gonna get up in arms about.

I also heard from Samantha Ferris (Ellen) herself that she was set to play a part in season 3, the agents/management going so far as to call and check her schedule to see if she was free. So even SHE says she was outed because of the two new happen-to-be-female characters. Now, if the higher ups ARE just looking for more female representation, it would make sense to me that they'd bring Ellen back. It seems to me that the introduction of their characters is to bring more young hot females for some CW demographic. I really don't know...

I think that too many exceptions are being made for Bela by the boys. It DOES NOT MAKE SENSE to me that they would keep giving her chances, when she's already proven that she'll continue to screw them over. And this may reveal my identity, oh noes, because I've said it before... if that character was a man, he'd have been offed a LOOOOONG TIME AGO. In all honesty, I haven't heard any compelling reason given by any fan that would change my mind about the character of Bela.

She wasn't a dangerous thief, she stole from old ladies for crying out loud. And that is soooo badass y'know!! *rolls eyes*

Y halooooooooooooooo thar, samdeanfetish! Trolled any Bela comms lately To Preach Your Word? And your secret font sucks.

No, not bad ass, but I don't find anything about credit card fraud bad ass either. Or being blatantly homophobic.

OMG OOPS? AM I CALLING DEAN A DOUCHE BAG? WHERE IS THE HAND OF GOD TO STRIKE ME DOWN?

My problem is that SPN fandom (or what I've seen. I'm sure there are sane fans out there) fucking worships Dean and Sam, who have INFINITE flaws of their own, but immediately flip a shit when a female character with equal flaws shows up. I liked Bela because she didn't take Dean's shit. Not to mention all the fic out there with the female SPN characters (including the ones who were only in one episode, Cassie) getting killed in horrible, horrible ways.
