Years ago, a radio DJ told me I had a really cool voice. To this day, I regret never working in radio.

"I wouldn't hate you so much if we weren't on opposite side of this" or words to the effect. I can't remember the wording, but it's nice to feel like it's not me personally people hate, rather than just the opinions I hold. Like I really gave me the warm fuzzies to know that they acknowledge me as a person rather than as an enemy, you know what I mean?

A reviewer called one of my short stories "powerful, bizarre, and haunting." I just love that.

Compliments about my writing always stick with me. But I think the one I like best for some odd reason possibly wasn't even meant to be a compliment. It's difficult to paraphrase exactly what was said, but basically my brother remarked I'd never really cared about what other people thought of me.

I go by my initials rather than a first name, which tends to throw people off and create moments of social weirdness more than anything else. A little while ago, one of my co-workers stopped by my desk to say "Every time I see your name on the schedule, I think 'Wow, who is that cool sophisticated person? I want to buy their latest novel.'" so that's probably the best compliment I've ever gotten.

Getting compliments on my work from pathologists and, especially, surgeons is really nice.

A Pulitzer Prize winning poet called me a very gratifying student whose writing was profound and exemplary. I didn't even like him, but yoooooo

When a guy compared my mind to the book "The Still Life of Woodpecker" by Tom Robbins. That made me very happy. I love it when guys understand that the fastest way to a girl's heart is through her brains.

Some random law school professor who had only sat in on one class I was in, never met me, told me in the elevator one day that I was going to make a good lawyer. I was having a bad day, and that was just what I needed.
