Re: Disney's First Gay Character

Disney has been hosting gay pride events for years, has been offering wedding packages to same sex couples for years, and has been extremely gay friendly in general for a really long time. I'm pretty sure that anyone who actually pays attention would be aware that Disney is not trying to deliberately insult gay people by this. I'm not even that big a Disney fan, I just find this idea that lefou being gay = Disney thinks gay people suck to be really weird given, y'know, everything else.

To be fair, from a standing start the choice of character is not encouraging. They could have at least gone for a non-villain?

They could've made Cogsworth gay like that one anon (maybe you?) said, but then he'd still be bad representation because he's a fussy sexless attendant to everyone else's relationships. Or they could've made the baker gay, and it'd be bad representation because he's a walk-on part.

nayrt but I really don't think either of those possibilities are remotely as "bad" as making the villain's goofy sidekick gay.

There's a difference between being friendly toward your gay fans (and not blatantly discriminating against potential customers) - and actually having the balls to portray queerness in your films. I get that it's not as easy as it sounds when your movies are marketed worldwide, including in very anti-gay countries, but you can't demand credit where credit is really not due. It's not impressive to make a comedic side-kick villain gay, it's honestly not. That seems like the lowest possible bar, since the gayness is basically a joke.
