Re: Disney's First Gay Character

It's more that unless they change his story, their proudly trumpeted first gay character will be a sad villain who falls in love with a man who'll never love him back. Which is a) an ancient trope you'd hope we'd be over by now, and b) a wonderful statement to gay kids watching to see what Disney thinks of them.

As opposed to before, when gay kids watching to see what Disney thinks of them found that Disney didn't think of them at all?

I would hope we have more options these days than being ignored or shown contempt. How wonderfully progressive.

We're just gonna have to disagree about 'a gay character is a villain with a crush on the same guy every single woman except Belle in his whole town also has a crush on' being a kind of contempt.

A) 'Gay character is a villain' is a bad start to start with, and b) 'gay character whose primary relationship in the movie is him being abused by a straight guy' isn't too hot either. I mean, granted we don't know how they'll play it yet, hopefully he'll wind up in a better relationship than crushing on Gaston, but still.

So when is the embargo on gay villains up? Next year? Ten years from now? When all the hetscum are dead?

How about when the canon in question has any other gay characters, so that the take-away message won't be 'if you're gay you're evil, pathetic, or evil AND pathetic'? What era are you from, the 1950s? Is the Hays Code still in operation? Why is the sadsack villainous sidekick the best option for the first gay character?

NAYRT

I mean, LeFou always came as pretty in love with Gaston to me even from the original movie? I know I'm probably not wording this right, but it probably seemed 'easiest' for them to make it canon than try and find another male character to throw in there and be gay?

I mean would it be awesome if they had gay/lesbian Disney Princes/Princesses? Fuck yeah. But it's Disney, they're ultimately still there to make money and sell merch, and this is probably their version of testing the waters while still making bank.

Yeah, I realise that it's the path of least resistance for them, but that honestly really doesn't make it any better. And maybe they'll make some changes to the story to make it less bad, but. It's still bad. Of all characters they could have picked.

nayrt but in what world do you think it's better to see a negative portrayal of a minority than nothing at all? When Disney has zero other canon gay characters, you think us poor gay kids will just be happy to see the stupid comedic villainous sidekick be our representation?

Re: Disney's First Gay Character

(Anonymous) 2017-03-06 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Sure, some of you poor gay kids will be just as happy, and why do you get to make the rock-and-hard-place bargain on their behalf?

Unless you're gay yourself, stfu.

Disney has been hosting gay pride events for years, has been offering wedding packages to same sex couples for years, and has been extremely gay friendly in general for a really long time. I'm pretty sure that anyone who actually pays attention would be aware that Disney is not trying to deliberately insult gay people by this. I'm not even that big a Disney fan, I just find this idea that lefou being gay = Disney thinks gay people suck to be really weird given, y'know, everything else.

To be fair, from a standing start the choice of character is not encouraging. They could have at least gone for a non-villain?

Re: Disney's First Gay Character

(Anonymous) 2017-03-06 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
They could've made Cogsworth gay like that one anon (maybe you?) said, but then he'd still be bad representation because he's a fussy sexless attendant to everyone else's relationships. Or they could've made the baker gay, and it'd be bad representation because he's a walk-on part.

nayrt but I really don't think either of those possibilities are remotely as "bad" as making the villain's goofy sidekick gay.

There's a difference between being friendly toward your gay fans (and not blatantly discriminating against potential customers) - and actually having the balls to portray queerness in your films. I get that it's not as easy as it sounds when your movies are marketed worldwide, including in very anti-gay countries, but you can't demand credit where credit is really not due. It's not impressive to make a comedic side-kick villain gay, it's honestly not. That seems like the lowest possible bar, since the gayness is basically a joke.
