I'm just really skeptical that Tumblr or fandom have anything to do with causing that. Just in general, not with you specifically.

It's pretty legit. With tumblr and fandom and fanfic you get instant id gratification. There's not a lot of work to go into it. And often you get it in small bite size portions so you can take it in and quickly move onto the next. Books, however, are often more mental work. They're slower paced, longer, and a world/narrative that you have no prior knowledge of so have to pay more attention to.

this is actually the reason I sort of fell out of interest in fanfic tbh. It mostly just didn't feel...involved enough for me, especially since I was super picky about what I read. I never stopped reading novels, though. The immersion and focus that you get when you have to devote all your attention to what's going on in what you're reading is the draw for me.

I guess my thinking is that your attention span changes for whatever reason, and that's why you spend more time on fanfic - not that fanfic ruins your attention span. You get older and more busy and more distracted and have less time to sit down and read, and so you read less, and fanfic is way easier to deal with under those conditions.

I dunno. It just never seemed to me like fanfic was causing that.
