Re: How as your day?

Anon with elaboration.

Today my boss made us sign a 4 page contract with various new rules. Most of it okay. But he said we can only use the bathroom 3 times a day (during our two ten minute breaks and lunch) unless we have a note from a doctor.

He is the only male in our company (also the owner) with 11 female employees. So, unless we go to the doctor we can't use the bathroom more than three times a day even if we are on our period UNLESS we clock out for 15 minutes (for a two minute pee break).

We can only clock in at 15 minute marks (8:15, 8:30, 8:45, etc). And even if HE is late opening the shop (so he gets there at 8:16) we still have to wait until 8:30.

He also would not let us take a copy of the contract home. :/

Anyone know an excuse I can give a doctor to use the bathroom more? My head is killing me because I usually drink 3 bottles of water a day (I have a labor intensive job) and could only drink 1 today so I did not have to pee.

Go to your doctor and say your boss is an ass who does not know how female bodies work.

Can you get a doctor to sign off on it for "general health reasons" - I mean there is a reason teachers have a higher percentage of having UTIs. Bathroom breaks and hydration are important!

Although honestly, three bathroom breaks a day seems fine to me. How many do you usually need?

da

Even if you only have to pee three times in a workday, those three times aren't necessarily going to coincide with your scheduled breaks. If someone has to go at 1:30 because that's when their lunch drink processes through, it's asinine to expect them to wait until 2:30 because that's when their next break is set for.

Ah, hadn't thought of it that way! Very good point.

But then it's also not unheard of. I manage people for my job and sure they can call up and I can try to get them bathroom breaks, but generally speaking they have to time that for their breaks. Because it's just not always possible to get in there. I don't know, there's just a lot of jobs out there where you don't always get to walk away to the bathroom on your own schedule. Shit thing to do, sure, and if OP can find a new job good on them!

How many jobs besides like, the military and police/firefighters make it absolutely impossible to take a pee break?

Hi, coming in randomly to this discussion the next day....

But I've actually had quite a few jobs where you weren't allowed to leave your job unless it was an emergency. And bathroom breaks were not considered emergencies. Store clerk (mostly because I was a teenager and my boss was a power-tripping asshole...), warehouse worker, assembly person or packer, teacher and teacher's assistant are some I've personally worked.

OPs situation sounds more like power-tripping asshole rather than related to the job unfortunately.

ugh. I guess I was sort of being in denial there that so many managers are that bad. But I guess they are :(

and people act like labor issues aren't important...YIKES

Warehouse can sorta be like that, though my job is far more lenient about it because, during the summer here especially, they URGE drinking water to stay hydrated and cool and that can lead to a few more bathroom breaks than would be normal. They'd have lawsuits otherwise, heh.

I normally only have to run maybe twice a night, so three times is a bit much unless I've just drank a lot of water/gatorade.

edit: Besides, with the turn over rate we have here, the people who constantly walk off and end up with a 30 minute "bathroom break" don't tend to be employed long.

I have a physically intensive job. I am on my feet all day moving and carrying heavy things. I usually drink at least 3 bottles of water a day to keep hydrated. This makes me have to use the bathroom more. Today, I only drank one bottle because I couldn't use the bathroom. My head is still pounding.

I get that. But I mean I drink two bottles of water plus one large ice coffee a day and two bathroom breaks is fine. I was just curious, not trying to judge.

For myself, I'd be drinking the water anyhow and dealing with the bathroom break situation as it comes up rather than depriving myself of water which I know will lead to headaches.

Is this a small business or part of a larger company with an HR department?

Re: How as your day?

(Anonymous) 2017-03-08 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Small business. I am going to quit. It has no benefits or anything. The leniency of hours was literally the only bonus of that job. I just got to figure out the best time to quit.

Re: How as your day?

SA - I figured as much. Bullshit like that is why I try to avoid going to work for small businesses unless I have no other options (can't really complain to the boss about my trainer hitting me in front of a client for making a mistake when my trainer is my boss's wife...). I guess until you can quit, I agree with the other commenter that you should just call your doctor and explain the situation, including the fact that it's a labor intensive job and you get headaches if you don't consume enough water. I don't know if that will work (and if someone has a better suggestion, I'd take that) but it's worth a shot.

I hope you can find something better soon.

sooooo many red flags.

definitely never sign something you can't keep a copy of. and know your labor laws especially if you work for a small business. it's hard to respond to something like that when you're not expecting it, though. :(

That's nuts. Even when I worked places where "clocking in" was literally punching a time card and breaks were formalized and limited, it wasn't that bad.
