I'd agree that these things shouldn't be done unless they can improve on the original (or do something different with it that's just as good), but personally there were several aspects of the new Beauty and the Beast that I liked better than the original.

That's fair. I'm not personally very invested in BATB myself, and from what I've seen, I wasn't impressed by the singing, and some of the acting just looked kind of bad to me. So with those kinds of negatives, I don't see it replacing the original for me, should I want to watch BATB.

Out of curiosity, did you like it better enough that you would unequivocally choose it over the original, if you were told you can only watch one of them from now on?

Hmm, that's an interesting question. I might, honestly. The things I preferred were the relationships between the characters. I love how they developed Belle and her father's relationship. I really like how Belle and the Beast got closer. That's more important to me than things like the superior singing of the original. Though as someone who loves animation and hates seeing it limited to kids stuff, irreverent comedies playing on subverting the kids stuff image, and Japanese stuff, I hate to think of denying myself the first animated film to be nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture.

See, that's the thing I struggle with. You've got some movies that were genuinely groundbreaking - so there's nothing particularly impressive about remaking them. It's a sure thing. And in some cases, improving on minor flaws is made even easier, because of COURSE you can tweak small things when you have a product that's already amazing! And if you're not an idiot, it won't ruin it either.

In a way, this is very similar to the question of retranslating in translation studies - whether or not it's legitimate to retranslate a work that's been translated well. And you get the people who say that things *must* be retranslated every 40 years or so, to keep them up to date - but then who's taking care of the original?
I think part of it is this obsession these days with only looking forward and never glancing back.

I've never heard about that translation debate before. That's interesting.
