Re: Nostalgia
So atm you get a generation who go for nostalgia, because they saw the original high-quality one and fell in love with it. But where do you go from there? Either we keep degrading forever (where each remake is evoking nostalgia for the previous one, and is thus of slightly lower quality), or you have to re-release the original in order to bring back the hype, and then..... why not just watch the original in the first place.
It's a "don't fix what ain't broke" situation. Some films do well with remaking, especially if certain flaws in the original can be corrected.
In many cases, there's nothing to correct, so you're just creating inferior products instead of new, original ones.

Re: Nostalgia
Out of curiosity, did you like it better enough that you would unequivocally choose it over the original, if you were told you can only watch one of them from now on?

In a way, this is very similar to the question of retranslating in translation studies - whether or not it's legitimate to retranslate a work that's been translated well. And you get the people who say that things *must* be retranslated every 40 years or so, to keep them up to date - but then who's taking care of the original?
I think part of it is this obsession these days with only looking forward and never glancing back.

I'm glad that growing up my parents made sure we had a variety, and not just all the big 90s things.
It's the same thing with books - we grew up reading classics too, reading older children's books. When I was a kid, one of my absolute favorite books was The Swiss Family Robinson, and another was White Fang. Neither of those books are especially new.
Palate is a thing that needs to be developed.
