Fandom Venting

[personal profile] mrs_don_draper 2017-03-27 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
(TW: Incest mentioned in my vent)

So I'm in the Sunny fandom, and recently the whole "you're a terrible person for shipping Dee/Dennis!" came up again. I guess what I don't get it why people care what other people ship, especially if everything is properly tagged so people can block the shippy posts.

How do you respond to people who react like that? Or do you think it's better just to ignore people who only want to flame and create wank? Do you think there's such a thing as a ship that shouldn't be shipped?

Feel free to vent about your own fandom woes here!

Ignore them. You can't reason with them. Also, I find it crazy that there are fans of Always Sunny who are moralistic over fandom crap.

That's my thinking too! Like, of ALL the insane shit they do on that show, incest is the thing where they go, "Whoa, whoa, too far!"?

Block them if they keep being shitty, I guess.

idk there are definitely ships I'd be happier if nobody shipped but that doesn't make them wrong...not talking about yours, since I'm not familiar with it or your fandom, just in general.

I have yet to have anyone say I'm a "terrible person" for shipping a certain pairing, but I have come across a few people who can't really see the appeal in certain pairings I like.

Either way, though, if I got a comment like that I'd just shrug it off and be like, "Well, that's your opinion, there's the back/block button" and leave it at that. Or ignore them, if possible (though, generally speaking, I know how tempting it can be sometimes to want to respond to the assumptions somebody makes about you/people like you :p).

Do you think there's such a thing as a ship that shouldn't be shipped?

No, because it's fiction and shipping something in fiction =/= approving of it in real life. If I REALLY don't like a certain ship I'll just ignore it and focus on the pairings I do like. Problem solved.

I ended up blocking the main annoying blogs. I just don't get where people find the energy to argue about shit like that, you know?

I'm so sick of This Is Us fandom shitting all over Miguel, no matter what he does, because - and this is an actual quote "he didn't waste any time moving in on Rebecca after Jack died!"

WE DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT HOW JACK DIED OR HOW/WHEN MIGUEL/REBECCA GOT TOGETHER.

And honestly, ever all I want is some good Rebecca/Miguel comfort fic. Ever since Miguel was talking Kevin through his jitters and said Kevin reminded him of Jack in the way he moved his hands and carried himself, and being around him was like having a piece of his best friend back, I've just been absolutely fascinatated by their friendship and can't imagine Miguel/Rebecca want born of anything untoward.

I want all the good Rebecca/Miguel comfort fic. This ship is everything I love, honestly. They both lost the person closest to them. Them bonding over that and gradually falling in love is everything I love in a ship.

There is something very weird about the Always Sunny fandom, of all shows, morally policing fandom works.

I'm sorry. I don't really watch the show, but I find it amusing fans take the time to "you're a terrible person" shame others when...they're in a fandom for a show that consists entirely of terrible people.

I just? What's the appeal of the show itself to them if something as innocuous as properly tagged incest fanfiction is their bar for "terrible people"?

If you're going to write a story about cancer (or any serious disease or medical condition), properly research your shit. Don't just shove every kind of symptom known to man onto a character and say that's that. Like I get it can be difficult researching this, but at least try and find out some of the specifics.

Re: Fandom Venting

Yeah, doing this in the Sunny fandom is really ...something else. Some people have no self-awareness, it seems. I'd also say ignore them and block/blacklist them if they get too annoying.

My vent is a bit on the petty side: I'm not even that deeply involved in the Adventure Zone fandom but I do get a lot of fanart thrown on my dashboard and... dear lord. There is this one person who really stuck a branch in the hornets' nest by complaining about people drawing Taako fat and she is a bit dumb about it. But I can really, really understand what her issue is.

There were those memes a while back about drawing overly "inclusive and progressive characters" and some of the designs I've seen for Taako really remind me of the abominations from those memes. It's really almost as if the "artists" try their hardest to make the designs as ridiculously OTT SJW-compatible as possible, but they do it entirely unironically and some of the results look downright grotesque. And it's basically a giant circlejerk because they keep gushing over each others' grotesque designs all the time. It's actually kind of hilarious.

I just...

Mon El isn't abusive. Okay? He isn't, and if you think that the problems he and Kara have are Mon El being abusive, you have unrealistic relationship expectations.

I don't even ship them. I'm still annoyed by how Karolsen imploded. But Mon El is NOT ABUSIVE JFC.

Ugh. Yes. I don't ship them. At all. And I'm still a bitter Kara/Jimmy shipper. But Mon El is not abusive. And he's a great character. Just, for me, not right for Kara.

Re: Fandom Venting

Recently I got into an incest ship in my newest fandom, so of course when I went into the appropriate tag on Tumblr, I ran across posts that were like, 'If you ship *pairing name here* then do us all a favor and kill yourself.' I just block all of them. Granted I have NOTPs that I wish people wouldn't ship, but I don't go and threaten people for it. I blacklist it and move on, and I wish others would do the same thing. I guess it just bothers them that people are having fun with a *gasp* incest ship. So I think it's just best to ignore/block the haters and seek out the people who do ship your ship. (Which can be kind of hard since a lot of people end up having to make alternate accounts/sockpuppets so that they don't get shit about shipping incest, myself included.)

Isn't that entire show about awful people? How the hell can anyone legit do any kind of moral policing in that fandom with a straight face?

Personally, I don't care what other people ship. Someone ships something I don't like? Oh well, the only thing I'll ask is that it's tagged so I can block it and if they don't then I'll just unfollow(or not follow in the first place). It's really not a big deal.

Like people absolutely have the right to not want to see ships that make them uncomfortable, but harassing a real living person over what two pairs of characters they want to see kiss is going way, way to far.

(Also I really have to question why people who hate a ship spend their time talking about and looking for said ship, like what the fuck are they expecting?)

But when it comes to antis on tumblr I just block them the moment I see them, makes things so much better.

YES. This doesn't make any sense to me, either. If I don't like something, I try and ignore it as much as I possibly can. That's kind of the whole point.

Like I said up above, I don't get why, in that situation, people don't just focus their time and energy on talking about the pairings they DO like instead. Maybe they'd gain a few new fans in the process or something. And it'd just be a much more fun and much less stressful thing to do.

Heart says yes, brain says no. So I just call it a "NOTP" and leave it be. There's no reason to harass people over something as inconsequential as what characters they want to make kissy faces at each other.

Re: Fandom Venting

(Anonymous) 2017-03-28 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
I'm frustrated by the general air of "my ship must be CANON" that's going on right now. It's what really fuels a lot of the shittiest ship wars, especially in cases where there genuinely is no canon ship. Or even if there is one! You're absolutely allowed to ship non-canon pairings.

It's especially bad with queer ships, too, I think. The idea of subtext is totally lost these days; it's either canon gay or it's "queerbaiting", which I think is... a damaging thought process to begin with, honestly, and I say that as one gay-ass motherfucker.

Idk, it's that whole black-and-white thing. It's not even just fandom at this point, it's everything.
